Need advice regarding people smoking around me

This morning i needed my MIL to take me for a blood test which was nice of her to do. But as soon as we were on the road she lit up a cigarette with the windows closed and got upset with me when i wound down the window for fresh air. Is it rude of me to ask her not to smoke in her car with me in it when she is doing me a favour? Just didnt know what to say, the smell of the cigarette made me feel so sick

Not rude at all, she should not have gotten upset!  Maybe she didn't even think of it, since its a habit, but she should have handled it better.

Since I got pregnant (this is my 4th), I cannot STAND the smell of cigarette smoke.  My husband smokes, in the house, and he thinks I am faking it because it never bothered my as much with the other three.
I am ready to strangle him because he wont smoke with our kids in the room, but once they go to bed he will smoke with me in the room!  Like, Who cares about me & the baby?!?
It is a very SELFISH thing to do, to smoke around someone who is pregnant!  My husband doesn't seem to get this, either.  (I am thinking of dragging him along to the doctor- on some other pretext- so he can her it from her! LOL)
Just be glad you aren't exposed on a regular basis : ]

I walked out of a neighbor/friends house because they both lit up (while drinking).  I am obviously pregnant and it never occured to them that it would bother me.  I have great disdain for smoking and I don't hide it - especially when it comes to my health, my baby's health or the health of my 8 year old.
The only one that can stand up for your unborn baby is you - don't back down...

Your mother in law should have known better. One of my friends is a smoker and I have never taken my son to her house (in 4 years) because of it, and I refuse to get there while pregnant. Not only is the smoke harmful, but it is proven that the dust left from it gets into you baby's lungs and settles there. Scientists have linked that dust to sids. You had every right to roll the window down!

That is incredibly rude. It may be her car but her unborn grandchild is WAY MORE important. She could've waited to light up when she dropped you off. While it's a tough situation by bringing it up she really should consider quitting anyway. My mom smoked while pregnant with me and when I was a small child. She got breast cancer and died.

And it's not fair to me because I didn't have a voice or a choice when my mom smoked- I was just a child! And I am so so so very angry because people die from secondhand smoke exposure as well. Your baby probably didn't have anything passed onto them because of one cigarette (a doctor told me you'd have to be in a smoke-filled room for about an hour before enough was inhaled to pass onto baby). But it's still disgusting.

Its here car but its you and your baby health.

Second hand smoke is just as bad as smoking the cigg. My fiance smokes black n milds and is NOT aloud to smoke in the house, even b4 i bcame preggo, i had a no smoking rule in my house, go out side. I dont smoke, im a nurse and second hand smoke is BAD. If im around people i tell them please dont smoke near me, go else where, i dont care if they get mad or not. When i go to my parents house, i go to one designated room and tell my dad and mom for my visit here, do not smoke in here.

My senses are so heightened since being preggo, i actually sleep in the guest room bcuz i can smell that awful smell on him and it makes me gag uggggh.

Theresa~ If it were your car... i'd say something. HOWEVER, I do not think winding down your window was a bad thing to do, ESPECIALLY if you couldn't breathe well.

My MIL is a jerk 1/2 the time. She will be fine and calm, and if I say something that wouldn't bother ANYONE but her (seriously... she was ticked off and I asked why... for example)
She'll completely blow up screaming and cursing. F**** this and F**** that, and it doesn't matter who is around.
Yet when I get upset because she is RUDELY and loudly smacking her lips when eating in MY home (i didn't invite her for dinner, she brought food with her)
and ask her to stop NICELY it's not ok....

OR when I get upset and yell at DH after he's been griping at me all day about stupid things, it's not ok. and she tries to "calm me down".. yea right.

IDK, MIL's are crazy sometimes!~ (most of the time!)
