Not frequent, or strong kicks at 20W3D normal??

by Kimberlee_20, Feb 25, 2009 06:35PM
I'm 20W3D today, and everyone is telling me I should be feeling the baby move a ton by now! I feel him like 3-4 times a DAY if I'm lucky, it's my first so I know I shouldn't be feeling him a ton already, but is this normal? Also when he kicks it's like, very light that I feel it, I can feel him squirm around and when he moves and everything but his kicks aren't very hard, and I was told they should be stronger by now? I'm so confused, I really should stop listening to people :[ haha

Even at 20 weeks the baby is still pretty small. It also depends on what position the baby is in when he is kicking. I know I didn't feel consistent kicks until about 25-26 weeks. And then at 35 weeks they slowed down again as he ran our of room. I wouldn't worry too much. If you are really concerned, drink some juice, lay down, and try to count how many times you feel the baby move, not necessarily just kicks. You sound just fine!! Some people don't even feel kicks at 20 weeks and freak out and everything is just fine....I think you are okay! =)

That makes me feel better, everyone I know here tells me I should be able to feel consistent kicks by now! I have another ultrasound on March 3rd so hopefully I'll get some peace of mind then! :]

I didn't even feel my baby ONCE until I was 20w  and even then at 24w the movement wasn't consistent...some days yes, some days no...My ob told me that it was normal and that you shouldn't expect consistent movement until 26-28w.

Lucky you to get another ultrasound!

Like chantal said, baby is still small, has lots of room...don't worry!

I've had a TON of ultrasounds so far, and they run $300 an ultrasound. At 20W they had a whole checklist of things they had to find to make sure the baby was 100% healthy, and they didn't do it, the tech made sure the baby had everything, but didn't mark it down! So I have to go back again and get it redone; also they couldn't find the nose and lips because he wouldn't cooperate,so that's included, & they're paying for it this time so I don't care, it's another chance I get to see my baby! :D

You'll feel more consistent movement around 24-26 weeks. A lot depends on where the placenta is positioned, where baby is, how big baby is, what your weight is (how much belly fat you have), etc.

When I was pregnant with my girls the placenta was toward the front of my belly so I mainly felt those early movements on my sides because the placenta took most of the blows. I never felt STRONG kicks that took my breath away like some women talk about. I felt them roll and move, but it was always gentle, because of the placenta's position.

So don't worry! Baby is fine and you'll feel a lot more movement all the time very soon!

Good luck with your ultrasound!  My doctor only allowed me three =(  I've tried to get another one out of him lol but he wont budge!  I had one at 8w to date the pregnancy then we had the anatomy scan at 18w...which we got to see 3d/4d because they were looking for a specific birth defect in the lips/nose (which he didn't have) BUT it is funny that you mention they couldn't see your little one's either because ours kept his hands up over that area for quite some time and then when he put them down, he put his face behind my belly button!  Luckily the tech was sooo patient and we were there for at least an hour and a half (hour with a tech and half an hour with a doc to confirm everything was ok)  THEN I got one at 24w to see if my previa had corrected itself...it did...so no more ultrasounds =(  I love ultrasounds!

I wonder if they'll do my nose/lips in 4D! I hope so! :] I want to see what he looks like, all I've gotten to see of his face so far is the skeleton of it haha :]

I'm glad you posted this question, It's a good one. I'm 20 weeks and 3 days, and I was curious to why only some days I feel some movement. ^-^

Feeling movement can also depend on where your placenta is at.  While most women feel movement at around 20 wks, if your placenta is anterior (on the front of your belly, the baby has to kick through a 'pillow' - I didn't feel consistent movements til about 23 wks due to this.

I thinkkkk my placenta is in front, unless it can move from the front to the back from day to day or week to week (not sure if that's possible) but whenever I have my ultrasounds, the tech has to manuver it around because the placenta's infront of the baby. Hopefully I start feeling something soon! :]
