OT~~Diaper Rash

Ok I've tried the Desitin and the A&D and baby powder, anyone know what else can make a diaper rash go away? DS has had one for three days now, and cries the most heartbreaking cry when I change his dirty diapers, because it hurts him....I don't know what else to do.

I have heard that if you put the diaper rash cream on baby's skin while it is still wet/moist from the cleansing cloth you are actaully sleaing in the moisture and making the rash worse. I am not sure about the powders. I use the A&D stuff. After I remove the diaper and clean with the diaper cloth, I then take a kleenex to dry his skin, then I put the cream on. If I do that at every change the rash generally doesn't last more than a day for the most part.

when I nannied last year one of the twin boys had a horrible rash and we used this cream called Sudocream, and within a day it was gone.
Its not in a pretty bottle in fact most women over look it cause its not that expensive and its in a grey container but i swear by it.

my son had a diaper rash last month I used balmex and when I changed his diaper I would wipe and let dry then put the cream on...and I well him sit without the diaper for a while...try that it should work try to keep the diaper off for as long as you can just put a trash bag or something under him

hi there my sister kids used to have bad dipper rash and like my old grand ma used to say CORN STARCH AND PETROLEUM JELLY first the petroleum jelly will help pervent you babys pee from burning his sore red butt and the cone starch will stop the burning i no its sounds stuped but i have 4 boys of my own and it realy dose help alot can you tell me how old is your baby..........O buy the was baby powder will just make it worst

Let him go diaper free as much as possible and let him sit in the tub a lot to soak his bottom a few times a day. When you change his diaper dont use wipes, use warm wet cloths, wipes can be too harsh and irritate the rash. If it still doesn't go away he might need a prescription cream used for severe diaper.

I JUST talked to my son's ped about this...he was warning me about a diaper rash that doesn't go away from typical ointments and said if it doesn't respond then it is a yeast infection.  Use lotrimin (antifungal used for jock itch, athletes foot, ringworm and diaper rash).  Good luck!  Please try this as crazy as it sounds!  Your little one is probably in need of some soothing!

You could just leave the diaper off for a while to let his bottom dry out. Burt's bees works real well. What works best though is letting it dry out. Leave a diaper off of him for a while. do it a few times a day until it's gone.

sweetangel7 I have heard of the lotrimin I actually used it on him once for a yeast infection rash. I forgot about him having it until you mentioned that.

megmil I don't think it would be a good idea to try Burt's bees. My dad and I have an allergy to bees, not fatally allergic, but my dad used some bee cream (forgot the name) for a tattoo he got and had a reaction to it, since that incident I haven't used any bee product, but I am ok with honey. So I don't know if Elijah would have a reaction or not.

Thank you ladies for all of the suggestions, I have tried letting him run around without a diaper for a while, and ended up cleaning a puddle off the floor, lol. I've definitely heard of the cornstarch as well, but I haven't been able to get to the store do buy any.

Oh...one more question. What's the difference between buying the cornstarch and Johnson's baby powder? It says pure cornstarch with aloe and vitamin e on the container. So is it not the same? It's ingredients are " ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, FRAGRANCE".

This was a major concern when I had my daughters. Their diaper rashes would not respond to Desitin or other diaper rash creams. The reason is that many children are allergic to an ingredient found in them (I forget what it is called off the top of my head but I can do a search if you're interested). It's also found in some sunblocks.

I hate diaper rash creams. They are pointless and expensive in my opinion. There are less harsh ways to attack a diaper rash without making it worse (which is what Desitin and the like did to my sweet babies).

There are a few things you can try. Here is what I do:

1). Sitz bath- warm water with baking soda. Just let them sit in it to sooth their bottom. Won't hurt them if they accidentally get some in their mouth but it'd probably taste gross. Rinse them and pat them dry (don't rub/wipe with towel). You can also do this in the case of yeast infection.

2). Apply Vaseline once the area is DRY. Otherwise it will trap the moisture.

3). You can carefully pat on some corn starch with a cotton ball. The corn starch helps soak up the harmful acids that are eating away at your baby's skin.

4). If that doesn't work within 48 hours, try Hydrocortisone cream (unless the rash has open wounds and/or is bleeding, then I would seek medical doctor ASAP).

5). Change diapers FREQUENTLY so there is less exposure to feces and urine that can harm their skin.

Girls and even boys are prone to yeast (bacteria) infections. In those cases the sitz baths help, along with an anti-fungal (always ask your doctor before using an anti-fungal on your baby!).

The fragrance ingredient in the Johnson's powder can worsen the rash. Corn starch is really inexpensive and is found in the baking aisle. I'd just a Sharpie and write "BABY ONLY" on the package so no one accidentally bakes with it (ha ha).

So if he's got bleeding and open wounds I should just take him to the doctor? It didn't start out like that he was just really red all on his but, but now it's bleeding in some spots on his cheeks and on his "opening", he's also become red on his testicles.

Yes, I would contact the doctor if the rash has started to bleed. That happened to my youngest daughter. That's when she told me to discontinue using any diaper creams. When it gets to that point it will take a little longer for it to clear up.

When his rash is all gone you can apply Vaseline during diaper changes to prevent rashes. It creates a barrier between the skin and the urine/feces that can cause the rash.

Please let us know what your doctor ends up recommending!

In the meantime, try giving him a sitz bath (just sprinkle maybe 1-2 tablespoons into his warm bath) to soothe the area.

Yeah, take him to his doctor. My guess is yeast infection or an allergic reaction to something.

Well, being that it's Sunday I have to wait until tomorrow to take him to the doctor. The TMC (kinda like a medical clinic) has after hours care, but the pediatrician probably won't be able to see him, and last time I took him...they really p*ssed me off. They don't know what to do with a baby, and would probably recommend setting up an appointment with a ped at the hospital that's 2 hours away. SO...I'll call tomorrow and set up an appointment, or just take him down and see if I can get in to see her. Thanks for the advice ladies!!! It really is wonderful to have a place to go to get advice, thank God I found this site!

***Sounds just like the yeast diaper rash my doctor was warning me about...you can apply lotrimin antifungal to it even if it is 'open'/raw.  

I'd seriously try the lotrimin otc...
