One-sided Cankles?

by Avanaar, Sep 05, 2008 08:57AM
Last night when I went to the bathroom, I looked down and noticed that my right ankle was really swollen.  I expected to eventually end up with cankles (I remember my mother having them bad when she was preggo with my brother), but didn't think I'd get them so soon ... or that they'd only be on one side of my body.  It kind of freaked me out.

I have a DR's appt today and am going to ask about it, but I wanted to see if any ladies here have ever experienced one-sided cankles.  I slept on my left-side last night and am making sure to get my water intake in early today.  My ankle's gone down since last night, but it's still a little swollen.  Anything else I could do to help alleviate my unsightly cankle?

My right side was always more swollen! Not sure why though so tell us what your doctor says!!!

I read on Babycenter that your vena cava (the large vein in your body that carries blood from your lower limbs back to the heart) is on the on the right side of your body.  Maybe since it's on the right that's where the swelling starts or is more prominent?  Who knows.  =D

And a new, kind of weird, development.  I got out of the shower and walked to the bedroom.  And it felt like I had water sloshing around *in* my right foot.  The best comparison I can think of is wearing those water shoes and trying to walk around in them after you've been in the water with them.  The feeling is starting to go away the more I walk around, but it was just something really strange!

my right ankle was always more swollen and at time the ONLY one swollemn, in fact its the only ankle swollen as we speak! doc said its just probably that the baby is laying more on that side.... its still annoying though...
just put your feet up every time you notice its starting to swell too bad and in the begining of the pregnancy that will work... now towards the end like i am... nothing helps!

My left ankle has always been more swollen that my right. When it gets really hot out, it's almost unrecognizable! ughh.... I have no idea why this is, and it freaked me out at first. My doc said it's nothing to worry about and totally normal. What you want to look out for is severe, sudden swelling of the face or extreme swelling in the hands/feet (like, three times their normal size) because that can signal preeclampsia, etc... Just stay hydrated and try to elevate your feet when you can, and wear comfortable shoes. I've tried ice packs but they didn't do anything, just made me really cold! lol.... staying hydrated is really your best bet. Cankles are unpleasant but there are far worse things, so just keep your eyes on the prize! :)

Thanks ladies!  I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's had one-sided cankles.  =D  Last night when I saw my ankle it *was* unrecognizable.  Not to toot my own horn ...but I've always felt I had very sexy ankles lol!!!  I have *never* seen my ankles that swollen before and it was just freaky!

As for the preeclampsia thing ...I did read about that on a few of the things I looked up last night.  That has actually been my biggest concern with my pregnancy ...that and getting gestational diabetes.  I'm so concerned, that on my library days (Thurs) I stop by Wal-mart to check my blood pressure (not to mention pick up a Vitamin Water and Dove Dark Chocolate!!)!  lol  I know it's not as accurate as the doctor, but it's a nice way for me to keep an eye on it.
