Yes, I do think you could trust a pregnancy test 14-16 days after you ovulate even with irregular cycles because the time between ovulation and your period is called the luteal phase. It only lasts 12-16 days typically. The embryoCea needs 10-12 days to fertilize, implant, and begin giving off HCG into your blood stream and urine. So a test should be accurate at that time.
