Prenatal Vitamin Nausea

by eachatelain, Feb 02, 2009 10:57AM
So I want to take vitamins to make sure my baby gets what it needs while it's in the womb, but every time I take the vitamins, I end up throwing up shortly thereafter. Even when I take them with food, I get sick and throw it all back up. Now, I'm pretty sure I've moved passed the morning sickness stage, because the only time I get sick is about 10-15 min after I take the vitamins. I don't want to continue to get sick everyday, because it really makes me depressed about being pregnant, and I don't want to be depressed about my baby... Is there anything I can do?

Have you tried taking them right before you fall asleep?  I'm not pregnant yet, but I'm taking prenatals still, and I Have to take them at night, otherwise they make me really sick.  But as long as I take them right before I go to sleep, I seem to sleep through most of the side effects.

I've tried doing that, but I have a tendency to forget to take them.
Maybe I should sit them on my pillow every morning, so when I go to lay down to sleep that night, there they'll be.

i am taking Sisu prenatal vitamins and have never had a problem with them, you get them at the health food store, (i did check them with my doctor first) the lady there said they are easier for your body to digest b/c they are a gel pill with powder inside rather than a hard pill. i take them when i eat, so at breakfast i take 1 and at dinner i take another. one of my freinds was taking materna and had the same thing no matter when she took them with food or without she would throw up. she swtiched to sisu and has never had an issue.

I had some trouble with a few prenatals as well. Than I switched to the brand called One Source...you can get them at Walmart. Their great and super affordable and I never had a problem with them. I usually take them after I eat dinner and I feel great!
Good Luck!

I had a big problem with prenatals as well. Its actually pretty common to get sick after taking them during pregnancy. For the first trimester my doctor actually took me off of them (the anti nausea pills made my narcoleptic so I wouldn't recommend going that route either) and told me to take 2 Flintstone complete vitamins a day since they have the same nutrients as prenatals. Worked like magic. When I eventually ended up going back to prenatals I made it a habit of placing the vitamins right next to my bed and taking them at night since if I looked at my clock even once before falling asleep I'd see the pill bottle.

My last pregnancy i took ethex, i didnt get sick but i took them at night. This pregnancy im taking ethex with some other added things but makes me sick even if i take them at night. So my Doctor said it was ok to stop them and take 1 1/2 flintstone with iron and i take an 800mcg folic acid pill. I will start back the prenatals after the 12th week.

How far along are you?

Sorry it's been so long since I replied but...

I'm 9 weeks along

On my doc's website, it says if you are having this problem, not to take your vitamins for a while.  I was actually hospitalized a couple of weeks ago for vomitting and was told the same thing there.  They said the baby would get what it needed for sure.  They were concerned about me getting what I needed.  They baby takes from you.

And if you are only 9 weeks, this could still be from the "Morning Sickness".  Many women don't get totally done with this until completely out of their first trimester.  I am one of those.  You could try taking children's chewable vitamins for now.  My kids love the gummy ones.

I have also heard that the Iron is possible what makes us sick from the vitamins.  There are prescription prenatals that are low iron or have no iron in them.  You can ask your doc about those.

As for me.....I won't get back to my vitamins until after I am done with this horrible sickness :(

I didn't read all the responses, so I may have repeated what others said.....

I'm 30w and it still happens to me...I'm only okay if I eat a significant amount of food with it AND it has to have carbs.  I usually eat an English muffin, egg  piece of canadian bacon and a piece of cheese.  This does fine...If I don't have the english muffin...I have nausea.

Each~ You can try taking other types of vitamins, either other brands of prenatals OR I've even heard of some women taking 2 flinstone's gummys along with a folic acid supplament. The way I see it, some vitamins are better than none.

You can always, A) Eat before taking them,
B) take them at night before bed
C) Take them with something to settle your stomach like tums or something
or D) try other types to take.

I couldn't take my vitamins for the most of my first 25 weeks of pregnancy due to severe morning sickness that whole time. So I did what I could.

Well I've found that taking them right after I eat lunch works the best. If I forget at lunch, I take them right before I go to bed, and normally my stomach just churns a little bit, I don't get sick.

Thanks for all the great advice! :) It was very helpful.

I never really had bad nausea that caused me to throw up my vitamins when I took them in the morning, but I started a routine at night with them anyway ... just to see if it helped with my regular all-day nausea.  What I did was have my husband give me my vitamin when we went to bed.  He always goes to the bathroom before crawling into bed with me, so he'd just grab my vitamin from the medicine cabinet and a glass of water and bring me my "I love you" pill, as he called it.  It was a great way for him to be involved with the pregnancy and for me to get my vitamin every night.

I'm glad you've found something that has helped you take your pill with less sickness!  If it returns tho, talk to your doctor about finding a different prenatal, or about taking Flintstones instead!  =D
