Should I take Flagyl to clear up bacteria at 16 weeks pregnant?

by mishcap1, Oct 16, 2009 02:03PM
I am 16 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed Flagyl b/c of bacteria of the cervix. I am so scared to take anything much less an antibiotic during pregnancy. I told my doctor I wasn't comfortable taking this medication and he assured me it couldn't hurt the baby. I had some slight spotting on and off in my first trimester and he said it was due to my cervix. I tried so hard for this baby and have stressed hoping everything was alright since the beginning. I read up on this drug and it says its considered a class "B" drug which is the same category as Tylenol. It warns against taking it in the first trimester and also towards the end of the pregnancy. I also looked up the symptoms of the bacteria infection and I don't have many of them. One last detail is that my doctor said that if the bacteria is left untreated it can cause pre term labor. Any thoughts on this? Anyone taken tis medication while pregnant?

I agree that NOT treating the infection could cause more harm than taking the medication to treat it. Class B drugs are better than Class C (and most drugs women are told are "safe" during pregnancy are actually Class C).

Just my personal opinion, but I would rather take the medication than risk pre-term labor, especially if OB suggested it. Best to treat the infection than have it get worse.

Almost no drug is a "Class A" drug. Most of the safe ones are class B so you are fine. Now , Class C? You should stop. If the doc says its fine then its fine!

did you mean to say the dr. said it COULD hurt the baby..or that it COULDN'T hurt the baby?? Just a little scared about taking anything. I spoke to a nurse yesterday and she also said it was fine. Now I will speak to the pharmacist as well.
