Surprise twins?

by luvmy2girls, Apr 07, 2008 11:50AM
Has anyone heard of someone having twins in our day and age and not knowing about it before hand?  I think I'm going crazy but I keep dreaming about twins.  I've had 3 ultrasounds so I think I would know right?

yeah you would definatly know ...they would pick up two heartbeats.....we found out we were having twins at 7 weeks triplets at 8 and back to twins at 9 weeks

I can see where they might miss a heartbeat early on, but the doctor would most likely be able to tell with your hcg levels to begin with, and you should be able to see it on an u/s!!

I kept having dreams of twins when I was pregnant with my first daughter. But my dreams were more like, "OMG! I have TWO? But I don't have a carseat or crib for the other one... I don't have anything for the other one..." So for me it was more of a fear because I wasn't prepared to have two at once.

Pregnant women have dreams, sometimes strange ones, but that doesn't mean you'll have twins.

I figured as much.  I'm just having weird pregnancy paranoia I guess.   It doesn't help that I get asked almost daily if I'm having twins.....and I'm not huge either!  I've only gained twelve pounds so far and I'm 26 wks now.

I know a pair of twin boys who are 19 and their mother never knew she was having twins as one was lying behind the other and obstructed the view on scans. She didnt know until labour. Scary eh

Well, I think now days they would definitely see a second baby in an ultrasound. My mom was pregnant with twins and didnt know it til she delivered, but that was 19 years ago when my little sisters were born 11 weeks early. One of the babies was up behind her ribs and they could not see her in the ultrasounds they did. ON top of that my mom didnt even know she was preggers until she was almost 5 months along. Crazy huh?

CHitten-thats funny, I just read your post as I was getting ready to send this one, and realized that you wrote almost the same thing about the boys you know. Crazy stuff!!

It's possible however not likely.  There are a lot of varying factors as to whether or not one twin could be HIDDEN.  High HCG levels may indicate the possibility of a multiple pregnancy but do not guarantee one as many women with singleton pregnancies have high HCG.

Chances are good that your dreams are just the typical crazy dreams of a pregnant woman.  You wouldn't believe the **** I dream.  I dreamt the other nigth that I was trying to find me real estate agent and she had been abducted.  WTF?!?!? LOL

I'm sure it's my insecurities shining through!  I'm so much more anxious with this one than I was with my first two.  The thoughts of a third are getting to me more than I imagined when I was trying.  Oh well.....it will all be over soon enough right?

OK, so I'm NOT the only crazy one!!!  I'm SO thinking I'm having twins (just had a set 2 years ago)..I've had 3 U/S, but my doctor still laughs at me.  It's nothing to laugh about...it's scary!  I've been talking to other Mom's that had "Surprise twins" and usuallythe surprise twin in 2 pounds lighter then the other one or it would be a preterm pregnancy because of the twins...I'm freaking out and I'm 25 weeks, looking and feeling 40 weeks...I cry EVERYTIME someone comes up to me and asks me twins or due anyday?  Well, neither...I seriously cry :(  It's so freaky.  The various kicks, with this breeched baby does added up....I REALLYhope someone else doesn't go through the same thing I'm feeling because it's scary!!

There is alot to be said for instinct!

I KNEW I was having twis before they told me but I don't know how I knew. Then my sister just had IVF and got pregant and started going on all the time about the possibility of her having twins because they had implanted two eggs. I said there is NO WAY because the chance of sisters having twins was dead small. Then she had her first US and they said there was only one. Well, at her 14 week Nuchal they video'd a shrunken sac and dated it at 7 weeks so she was having twins and I think her persistence was her instinct!!
Then there is this women that cleans my room at school and she is a twin and her Mum had twins after them! AND  one of the kids moms didn't find out til 24 weeks she was having identical twins because they were lying side my side in the same position so had just looked like one baby on all her US scans.

Good Luck!

My grandmother has triplets and one of them is my mom. Back then they didnt have ultrasounds but they did hear the heartbeats and the Drs didnt know there was 3 babies until they were born. There heart beats were in sync. Weird I know. My mom still wonders if there heart still beat the same.

A friend of mine recently didn't find out she was having twins until her 20 week ultrasound.  Two heart beats were never detected during previous visits!
