Tramadol/Ultram pregnant pregnancy

by viciouspink0315, Jul 06, 2009 08:27PM
Has anyone taken tramadol throught thier pregnancy? What was the outcome? I have been taking 4 a day and am in my second trimester. So far my second trimester blood work was ok. I feel guilty and my ob says that the only problems ever reported were from withdrawls. He also said that the only birth defects in lab animals were because they were given toxic human doses. I am still worried i can't help it. I hope and pray for a baby that is beautiful and healthy and has no developmental or mental or physical disabilities or birth defects but only God and time will tell. I will go through the withdrawls myself so that the baby won't. I want to do that. Just concerned that i have damaged or harmed my baby. Scared of the outcome. I have chronic pain issues. so they were a script to me. Any help or further info or stories would be greatly appreciated. thank you and god bless.

I've posted a comment about tramodol to a couple of different people today so I'll let you know too.  I don't really prettend to know if it will have any negative affects on your baby but I will tell you that I went through a nightmarish time getting off of them.  I was taking 400 mgs a day (recommended max dosage) which is double what you're taking but when I stopped them cold turkey, I went through severe withdrawals for about 6-days.  Chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhia and feeling like my skin was crawling and on fire.  I didn't sleep but about an hour per night as well.  It was the most horrible thing I ever went through.  Needless to say I was very pissed at my doctor for telling me it was non-habit forming and I wouldn't have any withdrawals when I stopped it.  This drug is relatively new and I think a lot of physicians don't realize how habit forming it is for people.  They think it's this great alternative to narcotics when in fact it's actually harder to get off of.  I hope the fact that you're only taking half what I did will partially spare you from what I went through.  I would talk with my doctor again and ask if the tramodol will make your baby go through withdrawals as well.  Make sure you have a plan for when you decide to stop it yourself. If I would have known, I would have weined off them slower and maybe had some valium to calm my nerves and help me sleep at night.  I'm sorry to scare you but I'm just passing on what happened to me.

I'm on something similar to tramadol, it's called baclofen. I'm also on Neurontin and Norco for a back injury. I'm in my 2nd trimester as well, but I'm not worried. What I've found is that baclofen causes a chance for spina bifida but I took 3 MG of folic acid a day and the other stuff doesn't cause problems unless I were to stop cold turkey (the norco doesn't cause withdrawal in me at all, neither does the neutrontin but I've heard the baby can feel withdrawal even if I don't.)

So total I'm on 3 class C meds. I'm not worried. My doctors are all monitoring me.
