Very low progesterone and PCOS and pregnant

by catrinasweetie, Jul 19, 2009 10:13PM
Okay, so this may be long, but I really need some help here.  I am 26 years old with 2 beautiful little girls that I had no problem conceiving. My husband and I started trying for another child a year and a half ago. We found out in February that I have PCOS and I was started on Metformin.  Well, I just found out last Sunday, July 12th, that I am pregnant.  I called my doctor right away and he had me come in for blood tests.  The results showed that my hcg was doubling like it should be, up to 3000+ at 5 weeks, but my progesterone level is a 5.  He told me he wants it to be at least 11.  I was started on Prometrium as a progesterone supplement.  My doctor sounds optimistic, but to me, 5 seems really low after everything that I have read.  I need a realistic answer, so I can be prepared if something happens.  Has anyone carried a baby with such a low progesterone level to start out with?

Your progesterone should be above 20 if you have a fertility condition, such as PCOS.

I miscarried my first pregnancy after being diagnosed with PCOS (technically my 4th pregnancy, but first after the diagnosis). My progesterone was dropping and no one would give me a prescrip for progesterone until I started bleeding.

You've caught the low progesterone EARLY so I would hope and think that the progesterone will help in your case in the event the pregnancy is viable. Progesterone supplementation, realistically, won't always work in the event of a molar pregnancy or blighted ovum.

It's hard not to worry but I wanted to give you an honest, blunt answer, especially as you wanted truth. It really could go either way at this point. But I'm hoping your story ends up happier!

(I am almost 27 weeks pregnant now, following that miscarriage, btw).
