What's the earliest you could hear the heart beat?

I was able to hear my baby's heartbeat at exactly 8 weeks. I have heard it's not very common to hear it that early and also most docs don't even attempt to before 12 weeks. With my first baby, my midwife didn't try to listen until 14w because my uterus is tilted toward the back. But I have had prior experience and knew where to look and whatnot. Also, when I went for my first u/s a couple of weeks later, I was measuring 9 days ahead, so baby could have been a bit bigger than 8weeks at the time.
