I'm probably going to sound like a bad mom, but DS was eating 8oz bottles every two hours at a month old...not kidding. We started giving him cereal in a bottle and it still wasn't enough, so then we did spoon feeding of thin cereal at night only. After that things were MUCH better lol =)
Our pediatrician was hard core about not starting until the baby was 6 months. It had something to do with food allergies. I can't remember exactly - he said to deter from food allergies. I cheated and started my son maybe 2 weeks before he was exactly 6 months. You always hear stories of babies choaking on the food or whatever but our son did just fine - no choaking and took the food well. It's a personal choice if you ask me. the ladies i work with were on my case EVERY DAY to give my son food earlier than what our dr was recommending.
we started alex on cereal(unsuccessfully) at around 8 weeks....b/c he wasn't getting enough...but around 10 weeks, and since then(he's 12 weeks tomorrow), he's been eating cereal, and at dinner time, he gets a few spoons of veggies and fruits with a 4 oz bottle or 6 oz depending on how much he eats from the spoon...
yea i took him to the er yesterday, and i knew i had to answer the food question, and omg the dr practically screamed at me...of course that's after the b**** of a nurse kept making snooty comments about me having his bink in my mouth...better there than the floor, cos that particular hospital aint' exactly the cleanest...i just looked @ her and said, well he's MINE, so i guess we'll be ok and gave her the absolute sweetest smile i could...i even heard her complaining to the other nurses, and omg wth it's my kid right? same deal as kissing him ;) irrelevant but thought i'd share lol sry bout that...
Back when my daughters were littleLittle noses decongestant Little tummys, the doctors recommended cereal at 2 months in the bottle. Times have changed (I guess), and they now are recommending 4-6 months to start cereal, and to avoid putting it in the bottle. My daughter tried spoon feeding my granddaughter rice cereal at 4 months, but she got very colicky. She stopped for a few weeks and tried again around 5 months, using oatmeal instead of rice cereal. She did very well, but lately, she isn't eating very good (she is 7 1/2 months and has had diarrhea, so that could be contributing).

Every doctor has their own opinion and much of probably depends on how "old school" they are......Babies don't "need" anything other than breastmilk or formula for the first year, as far as nutrition goes, but if they are extra hungry, they should be able to start getting additional food by 4-6 months.
