baby ventricles

by angie303, May 26, 2009 10:29PM
hi my name is angie and i went to the doctors today so the doctor could go over my diagnostic ultrasound which was done at 31 weeks. he told me that my babys left ventricle is mildly enlarged measuring 12mm. im very worried and wondering if my baby is going to have brain damage? or if this can be treated? and what are the effects that i will have to deal with? do ventricles shrink?

no, An enlarged ventricle does NOT mean brain damage. Most likely it won't cause issues. They'll probably do an echocardiogram on baby when he/she is born. it's like a normal adult u/s of the heart... just on a baby. It doesn't hurt and isn't invasive.

What they'll do is assess bloodflow in baby's heart.  MOST LIKELY It'll be just fine and things will even out as baby grows.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a son who was born with 3 holes in his heart. :) So I have a little experience in heart defects.
