baby's heartbeat- is it true

by sdbaby, Apr 01, 2008 04:01PM
We decided not to know what our baby is.
But interested in knowing too.
ok, this is my question...
I've heard people say if the heartbeat is less than 140- it's a boy, & if the sound of heartbeat is like a moving train ,it's a boy.
Also, if it's more than 140 it's a girl, & the sound will be like a galloping horse.
Is it true?

Based on your experiences, just clarify this to me.

I know that both of my girls were in the 160 range and my boy is now around 135 so I would say it's pretty accurate.

Well they say it's an old wives tale but my lil girls heart rate is in the 150's.

I don't remember with my first two what the heartrate was, but this one was at 136 and is a boy!!

Both my girls fluctuated, so I cant say if it is true or not. ANd the doc told me it slows down as the pregnancy progresses, so I wouldnt go by it for certain.

I am not totally convinced it's true...although with my mom (she had 2 girls and 2 boys) The girls' heart rates were always faster than the boys. I think the girls were in the high 150s and the boys were in the 140s. I am having a boy and his heart rate is usually 145-150. So I am going to guess if I ever have a girl, the heart rate should be higher than that!

my tech said that it's not true but she did say that when baby are younger in weeks all their heartbeat is always fast until they get a little older and then the heartbeat slow down  however my little girls heartbeat was the 150s.  So I guess partial truth to it.

False! Babies heartrates change depending on what they are doing. If they are sleeping or resting then the heartrate is lower or if they are awake and active then its usually faster. I listened to my daughters heartrate about 3 times a week (because I was always so paranoid) and when she was asleep it would be around 135 (sometimes even lower) and when she was awake and going crazy it was about 155. The heartrate thing is just an old wives tale and has nothing to do with the sex. When I was in labor and strapped to the moniter her heartrate was about 124 the whole time.

It's only true 50% of the time, so you still have a 50/50 chance of either gender! Bummer, I know!!!

The thing is, your baby's heartbeat will fluctuate anyway. They will have an active heartrate (faster) and a resting heartrate (slower).

I have two girls. One's heartbeat was always high, the other's h/b was always slower. I think it also had to do with their sizes.

Thanks all. I just thought based on heart rate I could find out, but we preferred to keep the suspense & thrill until we hold our baby & see what it is. Awaiting for a sweet surprise! lol.
