newborn detoxing off methadone question! please reply!

Hi
I'm 12 weeks pregnant, have been clean for a year now, and I am on methadone. I am really concerned with my babies delivery and if I will be able to stay at the hospital with him/her while she is getting weaned off/medicated/observed. I know they will hold him/her for at least 4 days to observe, but I just want to be there with my baby the whole time, through it all. I don't want to leave his/her side!!! Also, I know if the mother is present during the withdrawl it helps a hell of a lot. Has anyone been through this? Will they let me stay? I had only one appointment so far, with only a nurse who was kind of snotty and said "Well, you can visit," and that was all. But it is driving me crazy thinking about leaving the poor baby alone in God knows what setting, with all these strange people- of course I know they are helping and it is for the best but I just want to be there, physically, emotionally, etc. I know I won't be able to sleep at night worrying about my child being without me through that horrible time (that is my fault- I didn't plan to have a kid on methadone). PLEASE get back to me!!!! Thank you,

Is there any way for you to wean yourself off of methadone? It's kind of frustrating to hear that you're already planning on your baby having to de-tox. Why not just wean yourself? We all have to make sacrifices in life to protect our children.

Is there a diff. med that your doc could prescribe that won't harm your child?

BTW, that may have been why the nurse was snotty with you... Just a thought!

Okay, apparently you should NOT wean off of methadone during pregnancy. It could harm your baby more. Check out these stories and try to find women with similar stories. Apparently Watchdog has lots of stories!

Yea, I've heard that if you try to wean yourself off it could cause problems potentially like Miscarriage. Because both of you go into shock from not having the medicine.

You should never try to w/d off the methadone while pregnant more harm will come out of it than with taking the methadone.
