not sure whats going on!!

Okay so I was suppose to start my period around the 4th or 5th of November, but nothing came.  On the 18th of November I thought I started,  but it only came one time and was more like a blood clot.  On Monday nothing happend until around 10 that morning, but that was all too.  It was more like a brownish color.  Tuesday the samething happend, but not until late afternoon.  It's now Wednesday and I just went to the bathroom and it's now red and brown.  I'm not sure if this is my period because it came so late and it seems to come and go.  I have a little cramping, but nothing serious and I have taken 4 hpt...all negative.  Could  still be pregnant or could this just be my period.  I know I should probably ask a doctor, but wanted to know if anyon else had this happen to them.  Any info would be great.  We tried for a baby last month, but I really don't think I'm pregnant.  I hope to be, but I'm so confused as to whats going on with my body.  My period has never been this off, but of course when we decide to try it's two weeks late and now who know whats going on down there now!!  Please help!!
