thrush and nipple care

by nikko*ttc, Feb 02, 2009 05:58PM
I posted in the BF forum, but I wanted to post here to see if I could get other responses too. The little guy has thrush and my nipples are definitely feeling the pain. So far here is my regimen. Pediatrician called in nystatin so I've been giving him that three times a day. Each time I nurse, I've been putting some on my nipples. In between feedings, I have been using vinegar and water to clean the nipples and then putting miconazole on them. I then clean the nipples with the vinegar and water before he is ready to eat and then put some more of the nystatin on them before nursing him. It seems to be helping a bit, but is there anything else I can do to help with the pain. It only hurts during the initial latch on and then in between feedings it burns a bit. Up until the thrush I've had no problems so I am positive his latch is good.

Aspen had thrush as well when she was a newborn. I was prescribed nystatin but was never told about the vinegar and water thing. I know what worked for me though was to put lanolin cream on them in between feedings.
