Folic Acid

I'm 27 years old and currently 10 weeks 3 days pregnant. I found out I was pregnant when I was about 4 weeks pregnant. I was at that time taking only my daughter's vitamins. I continued on those until I was 6 weeks and 1 day pregnant. At that time, I began taking prenatal vitamins. I for some reason assumed that my daughter's vitamins had folic acid in them but just realized that they only had 3% of the recommended daily requirement. So, from weeks 4-6 of my pregnancy ( the most important time for supplementing folic acid, as I have recently read) I was not getting enough folic acid from supplementation. Also, I eat mostly whole grains and gluten free foods. I rarely eat foods fortified with folic acid. Should I be concerned with matters such as spina bifida?

I didn't take anything other than my pre nat with my son and he is just fine. Same with this pregnancy. They wanted me to take extra calcium, folic, iron and my prenatals. I'm not a big fan of pills so I just stuck with my pre nats and ate very healthy and son is perfectly healthy.

my drs office takes blood work on your first visit and checks everything so it was part of the testing he does for everyone. my progesterone and folic acid were low so i take both of those and prenatal.

I didn't find out I was pregnant with my first until I was 16 weeks so I was not taking anything. I eat normal foods but likely wasn't getting the all vitamins. My daughter is 9 and just fine

Thanks you so much for your response. What made them test you for low folic acid levels?
