Work Stress

I'm 33w 2d and am really beginning to struggle with work.   I'm not due to finish for another 3 weeks, but can I get my Dr to sign me off now? As I don't think my work would accept me changing the date that I'm finishing up.Because I work as a Junior Care Manager so am office based, I thought I would be okay working until I wsa 36 weeks, but the stress is really getting to me now.   The other girls in the office are making bitchy comments cause I get paid time off to attend my Midwife appointments / antenatal classes, cause they don;t get paid to go to their doctors for appointments, and because the carers we are in charge of do home care, if we can't cover a call we have to go out and do it ourselves, like last week I had to go out to a double-up call to help a disabled girl into her bed, we couldnt use the hoist because I'm pregnant so the girl's dad had to lift her out her wheelchair and into her bed for us to wash her down and change her.   The environment is really bad, and I can't even go to my boss cause she phones my midwife every few weeks when I've had appointments arranged so she can make sure that I attended them.   I was admitted to hospital at 29w with contractions which I'd had for two days, after the midwife saw how uncomfortable I was at my antenatal class, so I called my boss to say I was bing sent to the labour ward for assessment so might not be back at work before they finished up for the day, and my boss actually called the labour ward to make sure that I was telling the truth and had actually been admitted.   I just can't hanndle the bitchy comments any more and the stress keeps bringing on my Braxtons hicks, which last 2-3 days at a time.   Is it just my crazy pregnancy hormones? x    (Sorry its so long) x

Ur boss just sounds like a total idiot. and th fact she used to be a midwife she should be askin how u r not tryin to catch u out. but least ur off now and can get urself organised and best of all relax bfor babys here. i cant wait to finish up. i still hav 6 wks left of work and it cant come quick anough.

Hi RedRose, thank you.   Yes over here there is no law to stop employers checking if you attend appointments etc, but they shouldn't have to.   I asked my dad as he is a Union Rep and he said it's not illegal but to check for every appointment is a bit excessive and as for calling the police thats out of order, especially as I would have driven for 40 minutes to get to work to stay there for ten minutes before driving 40 minutes home again.

We get up to 52 weeks paid leave for every child we have, but it depends on where you work on how good your package is,  They can't pay you off while on Maternity Leave, and if, when you're ready to return,  they don't take you back into your original position, they have to offer you another post with an equal salary to what you were on.    I'm 90% pay for 12 weeks then onto Statutory, which isn't very much but I'm better off staying off for the year than paying for childcare - I can't get childcare before the LO is 6 months where I stay anyway.    I do think that I'll be looking for another job to go back to though< I doubt very much I'll go back to the job I was in xx

This thread has been really educational for me.  When I first read your opening post,  I thought NO WAY and went to your profile to see where you live.

There is no way in h3ll an employer here could call your health care provider and ask when your appointments are,  and if you're keeping them.

But I guess the upshot there is,  there is also no way here in the US you could be given a year off and still have a job to go back to - unless your employer themselves offered that because you were an outstanding employee.   There's no right to take a year off and have a guarantee of coming back.

Best wishes.

I went to the Docs this morning and he was quite happy to sign me off, so I now don't have to go back for a year :)   (or until I find another job to go to).   My partner took my sick line in for me, as I didn't want interrogated and my boss took him aside and started quizzing him as to why I had a sick line for 3 weeks, so I'm glad he went instead of me

Now I can concentrate on getting everything sorted for the little one arriving andstop getting so wond up with 60-hour weeks xx

Hi there! Def get signed off. My work was stressing me out too but I was only 13 weeks and sadly miscarried which I believe was due to high levels of stress. I told my boss I was pregnant @ 7 wks cos I was stressed and making a lot of errors. I'm frontline reception staff and sometimes we carry heavy packages etc. Soon as I told them I was pregnant they treated me terrible made me sit really busy areas it wed very overwhelming @ times. All of the stress brought on asthma attacks from begining to end. Funny thing is after my miscarriage and going back to work 1 month later; they couldn't do enough. All the time I was asking to work in quiet areas lol. I've decided when I fall pregnant again no one will know until I'm 5 months if I can. I'm not sure when you have to let work know? I would advise you to get signed off hun. Thats what I have decided to do next time round if they start with their nonsense. Good luck hun xxxc

Your job sounds a lot better than mine.   I think what makes it worse is that my boss is a retired midwife so she should know better.   When I went back to work after being admitted she took me aside and asked me what exams they done on  me to see if I was in labour / dilating with the contractions.   It was like she was trying to catch me out.   I only get 12 weeks at 90% pay then I'm on Statutory Maternity - surely they can;'t make you pay that back if you're off a year and decide not to go back?   My policy is in my sesk drawer, I havent looked at it since I found out I was pregnant.   I'm not normally one to shut up and just let things slide, I think its the pregnancy hormones that are teling me just to go off sick and be done with it, whereas the old me would have questioned everything.   I'm going to get a docs appointment tomorrow AM and just vent everything to him see if he can sign me off til my Maternity kicks in x

Thats shockin thats the way they are treatin u. especially bcos ur boss is a women. u would think she would understand. i would defo say to ur doctor about all th stress and tht bcos its not gd for u and defo not gd for ur baby. 3wks insnt tht long but by sounds of ur job its a lifetime away. In my job im on my feet 9hrs a day with a half hr lunch and a breakfast break. im allowed to take a break wen i feel i need one. They hav also said they will provide a seat if i feel i need one. ment to say bfor aswell about u said u might find another job wen ur off, but u have to go bak to ur job for a min of 3months after mat leav or u hav to pay bak ur mat pay to ur employer. so just be carefull. Because u are pregnant u should get let away with alot more bcos as soon as ur boss hears th words discrimination they dont like it and shouldnt say anythng else to u. Pregnancy laws have changed over th years and ur employer should look out for u not hinder u. do u hav a docs appoitment soon?

Thanks, I'm not sure what my maternity policy says, its been that long since I've read it.   I know I get paid time to attend appointments, ante-natal classes and even aquanatal classes if midwife recommends it, but I'm not sure how I would go about changing my finish date, hence why I'm contemplating getting a sick line to bring forward my maternity leave, cause I can;t stand being there a mo=inute longer.   After one midwife appointment, I didn;t go back to work cause I would be there for ten minutes before we finished up for the day, and my boss called the police, to come check on me, after she called my midwife to see if I had attended my appointment and the Midwife refused to tell her cause it's confidential information.   But calling the labour ward after I told her I was getting admitted because I'd been contracting for two days to see if I was there, that's what really done it for me.   Even my midwife was annoyed at my boss, she called me on my mobile to let me know my boss had been checking up on me.   It's getting to the point now that it's ridiculous, I can;t even get up from my desk and go outside for fresh air or take a 10 minute break away form my desk, cause if I'm gone for more than two minutes, they come looking for me, even if I'm only in the kitchen getting a drink.  x

Im also in scotland and what ur work are doin is discrimination. Im 29+1 and my work have been nothin but suportive and ur totaly entitled to be paid for every appoitment u attend and up to 4hrs paid leav for any anti natal classes. ur work have no right to fone and check up if u are attendin classes, or checkin to see u r wher u said u wer. u should read the goverment law about pregnany i found it very helpfull and intresting to what pregnant women are entitled to wen at work. as for bitchy coments workin with women is always bitchy but just remember ul b stopen and they will b left with it all. as for stopen early depending on ur work depends how much notice u have to give them. but again u can change ur mind if u want to. read over ur works policy and see if it tells u anythng. im also workin up until in 36wks.. well plan to. but i can change ma mind at any point and finish up earlier. good luck and hope it goes well.

Well I'm in Scotland, so I could have finished up anytime from 29 weeks, but I chose to work til I was 36.   I'm not sure how easy it is to change my finish date, but was hoping the Doctor could give me a sick line for the next 3 weeks until my Maternity Leave kicks in at 36/1.      It's just a horrid environment, I do at 45 hour week Monday - Friday, then I have to do one weekend a month which is 5pm Friday - 9am Monday - its basically sitting with a laptop and a phone, chasing carers to make sure they've been to all their calls and covering  calls if someone comes off shift...sometimes thats in excess of 100 calls to cover over the weekend , and they still ask me to do more on top of that.   I wanted to work til 36 weeks so I'd have as much time off after it was born as I could (I get up to a year), but now I'm thinking if just going off, and then job hunting when I'm actually on Mat Leave x

FMLA covers up to 12 weeks. I wouldn't want to use 10 of those weeks up before my due date. With my first I put in my 2 weeks around 7 months. I was waiting tables. This time I am a high school science teacher and I will be about 38 weeks on the first day of school. I'm a little lucky because I have the summer. However I will need to work a second job of some sort over the summer to save up for my maternity leave. FMLA is unpaid leave, after all.

I understand where you're coming from. We have to work as long as possible to make the bills. But you have worked a long time. I would say it's time to leave a hostile work environment.

I started maternity leave at 29 weeks. And was off sick for a month before that with headaches. You should check your work policy...they might send you on a maternity earlier if you are off sick for pregnancy related reasons. But i guess you wouldn't mind that anyway.

The midwife was considering making me stopwork at 29 weeks cause of th contractions but only let me continue because i generally sit at a desk, but its a really stressful job, and i'd rather be off and relaxing as much as i can, and make sure i have everything ready, than have to do 10/11 hour days in that place :/ x

No you should ask to be taken off. I am 29 weeks and I just went to the doctor the other day because the stress at work was giving me severe headaches. I'm considered high risk anyways, so my doctor had no problem taking me off. Good luck
