animals?

I am sure some of you have animals. I have a sweet black cat and a tiny chihuahua that is a bit crazy. My boyfriend wants to get rid of them before the baby gets here which I think is ridiculous honestly. I have had these two their whole lives and they are my first children. He is worried about them not adjusting to or hurting the baby which I understand but on the other hand I am aware there will be an adjustment period just like we have.  You teach your kid to respect the animals not fear them and you teach the animals how to behave with baby. Am I wrong here? Am I over reacting? I told him there was no way in hell I was giving up my babies.

You can try to prepare them as best you can before. I have a husky and a black cat. We plan to send home a blanket or piece of clothing from the hospital that the baby has warn. Some one will bring it home in a bag and present to them so they can smell her sent and try to get used to her. There is also a video on YouTube of baby crying sounds. My animals don't even budge from the noise but I think it's smart to see if there is anything that may freak them out. We are just trying to show a lot of attention to them now. I've also heard that they could worry that with a new addition there may not get enough food anymore so just to make sure that isn't something they think we try to keep on schedule with feedings and give slightly more treats with attention but also going over listening skills and training so they remember who is boss.

The reason I don't allow animals in my kids and babies rooms is because of dander, hair, and possible injury to baby. Cats can suffocate a baby. Plus my animals have places that are strictly theirs.

Thanks ladies you have made me feel a lot better. I know the animals will be fine and accept the baby as their own I a  sense just like they have accepted me and him too. Those babies mean the world to me and I am glad to hear I am not over reacting. I don't plan on keeping the baby away from the animals or them away way from the baby either. That is just not fair to anyone. There will be limited time spent in the babies room as I know my dog will make babies toys her own which isn't good but other than that I know they will be fine. My dog can tell I am having a baby I am sure.  Before she was very unsure of and barked at babies and would stay away from them. Last week we had a friend over with her 4 month old and my dog laid on the floor with the baby amd kissed her didn't bark or run from her and was very nice to her. I think it will be an adjustment but it will be fine.  Thanks again for listening to me whine :)

I have a french bulldog that told me I'm pregnant I do not want to get rid of him, he is very stubborn and set in his ways. I am going to get him as involved with the baby as much as I can I'm not going to say he has to stay away from the baby as I think it's the wrong way to go about it. I have put in place somewhere for him to live if he don't get along with the baby and as I'm 37 weeks pregnant could be any day now I'm so scared that I might have to give him up (even though he will be in my boyfriends brothers and well looked after) he is still my boy. Put your foot down stop being paranoid you just have to be extra careful

I'd never give up my pets,when you hAve the baby and your at hospital give your partner a change of clothing items the baby has worn.let ur pets hAve an item each to get the scent of baby.it gives them chance to adjust before baby arrives home.it works :)

No need to get rid of the fur babies. I have a dog and 3 cats. They know they are not allowed in babies room.

I have a chuwawa and jack Russell cross she is a pain at times but I would never dream of rehoming her yet my partner wouldn't be bothered!  How could they! These animals are part of the family

My cats loved my daughter at first and tried to cuddle with her when I was holding her (could have been jealousy.) Now that she's one, she yells and chases them & really just wants to pet them bit gets too excited. The cats just run and hide or lay down in what hubby calls "the rape position." Both cats still have claws and have never bit or scratched her ever! My mom's dog has sort of claimed my daughter... She can stick her hand in the dogs mouth and take a toy away without the dog doing anything, but if anyone else did that they'd probably lose a hand! It's crazy.. The dog will follow her around and just lay down in the playroom & watch her play. I would just make sure your careful with them all at first.

I would honestly never even consider getting rid of my babies. I love them and they have helped me through so many hard times. I don't know what I would do without them. I hate that he even suggested getting rid of them and it kills me  I told him he didn't wanna put me in the position of making a choice between my fur babies and him because he wouldn't like the outcome they mean that much to me.  I am super upset and can't stop crying.

We have always had cats and dogs. We did get a Boston terrier puppy shortly before our first was born and we did have to give him away. He was a biter though. He was fine with us, but anytime he got near our son he would bite him. We went to classes, had a trainer come out and we were finally told that he would probably never be a child friendly dog. We have a pit bull, bull mastiff, and border collie that did just fine with our babies. We have always had cats as well, the main worry is that they like to lay on baby. I do not recommend getting a puppy while you are pregnant, that is a lot of change for a dog that is new to the family. Hope this helps.

I have a chihuahua and a cat as well. My dog is always excited. The animals need to adjust just like everyone else needs to as well. My bf did not dare tell me I had to get rid of them. Just take simple precautions. Make sure you don't leave the animals alone with the baby. When the baby is sleeping shut the doors where the baby will be and get yourself a monitor so you can here him/her. You may be surprised how attached and protective they will be over the baby. My nieces and nephews basiclly have there own little guard dog and cat they won't harm come near them.

I would never give up my furbabies. Just make sure you spend some time with them so they don't get jealous. Babies are an adjustment for everyone.
