bacterial vaginosis while pregnant?

Can anyone relate? I had a pap smear that came back possible BV but apparently I habe to get the swab test for more extensive study for them tk make the diagnosis of BV. But I'm already 25 weeks my next appointment isn't for another month.  But the OB just said we will do swab test at next appointment. Its just everything I'm reading says that it's very important to treat as it can cause preterm labor.  Im so confused. Help

I agree with the other girls. That seems like alot of testing and checking for such a common infection. Maybe it is because they don't want to give you the meds since you're pregnant and they want to see if its weak enough your body might fight it off itself. I thought I had BV a couple months ago but then my symptoms went away in two days on its own. I've had it two separate times before pregnancy and it was a ***** to get rid of the first time! I took Flagyl pills, that worked then it came back and I took the cream version which worked for a week or so and then it came back again and had to take the pills again. Antibiotics really mess up the natural bacterial balance in your vagina and your intestines. Are u having any symptoms of BV? Or they just did a routine pap and said you might have it? If you do you might want to try a natural method , I did the second time I got BV. My fiance's mom suggested this because she is a holistic nurse practitioner. Buy some plain unsweetened Greek yogurt and put it in an ice cube tray. Let it freeze and every night for a week put one cube up there. The yogurt has lactobillus which is the good bacteria your vagina normally has that fights the bad bacteria causing the BV. It worked for me and is totally natural and safe! It also works for yeast infections. Even tho they are different infections it all has to do with the same bacteria. Good luck!

I went to the ER on Feb 14th for vaginal bleeding... they told me it was a UTI and sent me home... over the course of the next 2 weeks I was still spotting like every other day and the doctor tested me for BV and said I had it..  she said it was common with pregnancy and there was nothing that I did wrong to get it... that it just happens because hormones mess up things down there... I am on day 5 of the treatment... I also have another UTI... I didnt have these problems with my first pregnancy but this time around I do... My first pap everything came back normal so they didnt test me for anything untilI ccomplained about the bleeding. .. they generally don't do regular pelvic exams until like week 35 (im 27 weeks)

I had it when I was about 25 weeks too. It made me pee myself a little. They gave me a cream and I was fine in a week. It's more embarrassing than anything honestly.

I had it my dr checked and told me right then and there and it can cause preterm labor because I'm going thru it I have since been treated for it but I'm 30+4 and 5cm and was told I most likely won't make it full term so I'm currently on bed rest until he decides to come  :-( but I'm praying he stays in there. Good luck.

Idk why it would take them so long to treat u for it, that is odd. If it was bothersome though I would go to ER & they will def treat you for it the same day.

Its common to get BV in pregnancy.  This is baby #3 & each time I had it. They just prescribed me clindamyacin, I think that's the name, & you're good in a week. The hormones in your vagina are chaotic & some women are prone to yeast & bacterial infections more than others. As long as your ob catches it & treats you for it, you're fine. They have to look for that kind of stuff to keep mom & baby safe.  So, at the time of delivery you will be hooked up to an iv containing antibiotics just to be on the safe side. Doesn't affect you or baby in any adverse way.

The levels maybe low so they want to see if it will clear itself up. The vagina after all is a self cleaning organ. If they do another swab and it has grown then they will treat you then.

I agree. Very weird you would have to wait so long when BV is easily and quickly treatable.  Hmm I would call them and make them test you asap because it does pose a threat to your pregnancy.  Good luck!

That's odd they'd have you wait so long for the test. ...i had bv for over 2 years and didn't know it until I changed doctors everyone kept saying that was my body chemistry but i knew better and when my Dr found it it took maybe 15 minutes to get the results and no lie with medicine it cleared up in less then a week. ... It is important to get it tasted while pregnant tho because it can cause complications I'd call your Dr and tell him your world and you'd like the peace of mind. ... He may be willing to see you sooner and it can never hurt to try
