cod liver oil capsules

I heard cod liver oil capsules (e.g GNC's Vitamin A and D3) aren't safe in pregnancy.  I read somewhere that fish oil shouldn't be taken in capsules as it is raw.. is it true?  I have been given folic acid tabs by the doctor but I thought that fish is good for the eyes and brain so kept on taking the oil capsules n then read about them not being good. Kindly clarify.. thanks!

Doing some quick research, it comes down to the possible of having too much vitamin A which can cause birth defects, and it can keep your blood from clotting...in pregnancy, being anemic naturally is already an issue. That being said, here is a quote about it that I think personally is probably the best answer.....

".. it is better to take fish oil that has been extracted from the body of the fish rather than the liver, as this reduces the risk of suffering the adverse effects to a considerable degree. Also, make sure that the fish oil supplement comes from a reputed and good quality manufacturer, as this ensures proper purification for removal of mercury and other toxic chemical traces from the key ingredient of the supplement. Remember, consult your doctor and get necessary tests done to know what vitamins and nutrients you need, and in what quantity, before going ahead and popping in those fish oil supplements. The right thing, in the right quantity, at the right time, is what does the trick and pregnancy is definitely not the right time to take your chances with medicines and nutritional supplements."

Hope this helps!!!
