Oh, and they have contraction timer apps on smart phones. You time from start to finish of a contraction, then how long between. When contractions are 5 minutes apart lasting 1 minute each, it's considered active labor (usually) and many doctors suggest going to the hospital at that point

I suggest eating before going to the hospital. They won't allow you to eat once admitted in case of needing a C section or another procedure. I had a C section after laboring for 25 hours (water broke on its own), due to me having a fever and my son not really moving. I hadn't eaten for 25 hours, then had to wait an additional 12 before I was able to have broth. I was not allowed food of substance until I passed gas. Eat while you can!

Contractions are just string cramps (or mild ones). I didn't even feel my contractions for the first few hours, even though they appeared on the monitors. When you get into active labor you will feel the difference, they become very strong usually and can knock the wind out of you.

I've heard that you count from the beginning of one contraction to the beginning of the next contraction. I never actually had contractions with my last pregnancy. As for eating, I'd do it now because a lot of times they won't let you eat once you get to the hospital.

Sounds like you are timing them correctly. Just watch a clock and see how many minutes they are apart. Things like jello, clear soda like ginger ale, Popsicles with no fruit, and a soup broth would be a good snack. A clear liquid diet if you feel you are close or laboring.
