ever have to get rid of a pet?

Ok so this isn't really baby related but I'ts something I have to go through with this pregnancy.  I have a 4 yr old quaker parrot that ive had since he was 6 months old and I have to find him a good home soon, esp. Before the baby is born. Im due oct.15. He is very bonded with me and thinks I am his mate. He is very jealous over me, for example no one can give me a kiss w/o him getting upset and flying over and trying to bite that person then demand he gets kisses. I didnt plan on having another baby. I just turned 33 years old and my girls are 10 and 12 yrs.old.  He is really sweet at times and talks and makes us laugh but I'm terrified he will hate the baby and try to attack it because I will be holding it. I know birds are not for everyone and to be honest its like having a forever newborn. Im just a bit sad because I dont want to just give him to someone that will ignore him. He flys throughout the house for at least 4 hours if not more each day. Anyone else going through the rehoming of a pet?

I think what upsets me most is I know parrots can get really depressed and start plucking their feathers or refuse to eat. It will break my heart if he isnt happy in his new home.

I understand it can be hard but you are doing the right thing and thinking of the safety of your baby. We have a cat and I am trying to train her to be an outside cat. She is a great cat but the only thing I worry about is she is always trying to sleep up by our faces and I don't want her to do that to the baby obviously. So outside she goes. I still let her sleep in the laundry room at night.

Thank you Heather. Well I am waiting to hear back from the sanctuary that is close to me. It will cost me 750.00 a year untill he dies.  He will be 5 years old in August,  so another 25 years of life expectancy lol. Well at least I will be able to visit him, I'm just waiting for the owner to call me back, my youngest really deserves a medal. She's been helping me with him. Good luck to everyone else that has to re home a loved pet.

I don't really have any suggestions. ..but this makes me sad. My mom owned 2 parrots for years, she out them in their cage and hung it outside of her on her porch (their normal morning routine) and some jerk kid came by and let them go. She cried for weeks. So I can imagine how sad you are. Hopefully you get someone that maybe won't mind you being able to see pic's or get updates about him from time to time. :-(

Unless you've owned a parrot explicitly, IRS hard to understand how intricate their psyche is, or what they need daily. It's time consuming to say the least. Birds can't be compared with dogs or cats when it comes to a home. They are a very different species. What a parrot would require for a healthy home versus a dog or cat is very different. At this point, the baby may be in serious physical very real danger after it's born. If it's already going after the cat, the bird probably is already displaying the start of possessive/anger issues that can tanner to anger at the newborn. I fully support giving the bird to an environment that would be healthier for the bird. And more safe for the baby.
PS, the bird sanctuary is in Cali, where I live.

Dragon baby im sure if your dog bites your baby in the face he would be out of your home in an instant. Esp if it left a scar or seriously injured its eye where the baby went blind. My bird can do this, my bird has bit and taken a chunk of skin out of me because I accidently scared him.

To people animals r just that but We are the animal's whole world. You wouldn't give up a difficult or trouble child would u. My dog is very jealous and attach to me. He always have to have my attention & everyone tells me to get rid of him. But I would never in a billion years give him up. He is a huge part of my life & my world. I'll it make out. Because I'll never give up on him. I'm his hope & dreams. He looks up to me.

Thanks for your replys everyone but I know I have to find him a new home. He needs constant interaction and attention and I know it will not be the same once the baby is born. He is like a forever newborn although he can seriously hurt you at any moment. No matter who tame a bird is they will forever be a wild creature.

Farah, until you have a parrot I really dont think you can compare it to a dog. The cage I have is so huge I can fit inside of it. I have a parrot that isnt bigger than my hand. If you have an animal that you adore but now you cant give it what it needs you have to do right by it. My bird is constantly with me and he will hurt the baby badly if he is ever given the chance and I can not keep him locked up 24/7.

Is it possible to see how he is first? But be extra careful for those first few exposures? Id hate for you to always wonder if you had to,ya know? Pets really get into our hearts.
Like, I had a real spazzy dog if you pet the cats or made any kind of attempt at being affectionate with the cats she would be right there to break it up. But when I brought the baby home she smelled and smelled and smelled that baby. And became very protective, really surprised me! Yours might too!
I do understand your situation. Its heartbreaking.

Yes we have to get rid of 1 of our dogs. It is a horrible feeling but sometimes decisions like that have to be made. :-( birds can go thru that yes but if there is someone you can give him to that you know and the bird knows it might be a better situation and he might not go thru the depression. So sorry you have to do that but I know how you feel. Im due in 3 months and know it will be so hard to go thru getting rid of our dog.

This is so heartbreaking ! Maybe you can try the idea mentioned to get him a bigger cage for now until he adjusts to the baby being around. In my opinion, I could never get rid of my dog because a baby was coming. But I look at these situations in a completely different way that most because I am so spiritually connected to any animal I own.

Thank you heather, I just emailed a bird sanctuary where I live. I'm in Virgina btw. Oh and the bird I have is illegal in certain states. I hope they can help me. What state is the bird sanctuary in that helped your mom?

My mom had to get a new home for her umbrella cockatoo because of her work schedule picking up to where he couldn't be cared for properly, and he started acting out. He was also very possessive of her, same way. It broke her heart to do so, but it was the right thing to do. Parrots are VERY intelligent animals. Of there's not enough mental stimulation and contact, they actually have the intelligence to go insane. They'll lash out at their enviroment (becoming mean, biting household members, ripping out their own feathers, tearing things up in the house etc). We gave him to a bird sanctuary owner who wanted a personal bird for his house.

I think you are making the right decision. He needs someone who will make him priority one, which will be impossible for you shortly :( Look at places/people with experience in this or have had parrots. Quiet households, a single person with the time and money (they can be expensive) etc. Having other animals in the house you give it to is usually ok, a long as their not already "paired" with a parrot :) I wish you the BEST of luck

My husband and I got rid of our 3 yr old siberian husky when I was pregnant with my first. Once I started showin and people paid attention to my belly he would act out. He wouldnt really eat and wouldnt go to the bathroom just lay out on the porch until we would bring him in. Once we would go to bed within a half hour he would poop and pee all over our floor and we were in military base housing. After a month of cleaning it up everyday we figured it was probably just the pregnancy. We had to keep him outside which I was against so we gave him to a friend and he went back to normal until she got pregnant then.

Thanks for the reply but I already have a big cage for him, I can actually fit inside of it. I have another cage thats smaller that is for the dining room. We have a tri-level homel and he has to be in the same room with us humans.  Yes the problem would be when he is out of the cage and I have tge baby, which would be pretty much all the time. I have a cat I cant even pick up due to the fact that he will try and attack the cat if I do. Now the fat 3 legged cat he doesnt do that too and even gives him kisses. Birds are such turds at times lol

This is heart breaking! I think it would be best to keep him & find the solution. There is always a solution. I agree with the comment above. It will be an adjustment...but he's worth it. It sounds like it will shatter him to lose you...

Maybe u can get him a bigger nicer cage, more space for him when hes locked up and just see what happens when baby comes. Dont ever leave them unattended,  give each being time and love separately.  It may not be necessary to give him away.
