vicodin

I have severe back pain and my doctor has given me vicodin.  She said it was safe to take while pregnant.  Have any of you taken it while pregnant?

@newoutlook12 Tylenol 3 and vicodin are not the same thing. Tylenol 3 is acetaminophen and codeine and vicodin is hydrocodone and acetaminophen.
@chelecameron I have taken vicodin before during pregnancy be Dr said short term was fine, it's long term that has the higher risks, but still not fully proven if it causes any problems with the baby.

Vicodin and Tylenol 3 are both Category C drugs for pregnant women.  According to the FDA, this means "Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks."  In other words, it hasn't been proven harmful, but it hasn't been proven safe, either. If this bothers you then ask your doctor if there is a class A or B drug you could try instead, however it will probably not be as effective.

It's perfectly normal to worry. In a perfect scenario we wouldn't have to take anything. I have been taking them for the last couple weeks because of kidney stones. I was worried as well but the pain is unbearable without it however I feel lucky it happened late in pregnancy so major development is finished as there's always a risk. Just make sure to take it only when absolutely necessary and you should be fine. Best of luck to you x

Yeah the doctor in question is my primary doctor.  I am now seeing an actual obgyn.

Thanks again for all of your responses

And hun if you are unsure of your doctor and early in your pregnancy, it is best to find a better doctor now. The further along you get, the more of a possibility that you won't be able to switch later. Do some reasearch and see if you can find any reviews. I'm lucky since I've been with the same obgyn since I was 17 and she was my moms obgyn before that and delivered my first baby. So I trust her whole heartedly

Bahaha! Where did i say there was an issue with getting a second opinion? I had to do it with lower back pain years ago and one doctor said it was my muscles and went to a different doctor and it turned out to be a kidney infection. You saying that even if multiple doctors told you it was safe you'd still worry is the exact opposite of trusting a second opinion. I put my faith in my doctor because no matter how many children I have, they have more knowledge about the medical field than I ever will.

My cousin had the severe back pain as well and she was even able to see a chiropractor a couple times a week. Maybe something to look into as well

I was taking hydrocodone 10/325mg my whole entire pregnancy for extreme back pain.. as I have 2 budging discs. In my lower back and pregnancy only made it worse... I was told it is ok just don't get addicted to it because the baby can have withdrawal symptoms I stopped taking it a week before I went into labour for my c section and my baby is and completely beautiful healthy 4 month old little girl.

What's the point of going to a doctor(s) if you won't trust their medical opinion? When they prescribe something knowing you are pregnant theu are looking out for your wellbeing and the well being of your baby.

I just want to be safe.  Sometimes I'm not even sure about my doctor. I just wanted to also ask other expectant mothers if they have taken it during pregnancy

It's a high dosage med....I'd be worried to no matter how many doctors told me is safe.

Its probably Tylenol #3 but that and vicodin have the same exact ingredients in them. They are both ok to take while you are pregnant as long as its not for a long period of time.

Why are you not wanting to take something your doctor not only prescribed...but said was safe to take?

They gave me Tylenol that has vicodin in it. They said that was fine. But it's not plain vics. The hospital gave me my script and I was worried but my ob said it's fine.
