I have heard people name their children Robot, nightmare, hurricane, danger and gypsy. To me these are just plain mean. My cousin named his son Michal,I had to ask if it was pronounced Michael or Michelle. My name wasn't common but wasn't weird either but growing up I hated it because whenever we went somewhere for vacation my sister and brother could get cool souvenirs with their names on them. I was never able to because my mom spelled my name with an I and not a Y. I turned around and did the same thing to my daughter Hanna, no h on the end...oops

One thing that I don't think many people have thought of,  is if you give your baby a unique name anyone can find them.  The world is more and more online, and if you have a name like Joshua Turner,   you can expect a reasonable amount of online privacy because no one can find you.

If your name is Josshyua Turner,  not so much.  You're a google click away.

There is something to be said for a little anonymity.

I really like the kaydence it is very pretty. That is what I mean, those sound nice and are pronounced how they are spelled. Names similar to those are not what I would call weird, unusual yes but that is a good thing and makes them stand out from a bunch of other people.

I agree with kbrennen26 on what is considered weird and not a name. That would be like your last name being Head and giving your child the middle name gives. Somethings are just not appropriate for a name.

You can name your child anything you like. But imagine the people who are going to be a part of an older generation who will pass them by for interviews because they cant even pronounce their name. A CEO is not named Story Davison ..Vaginna Smith ...Legend Carter...Strawberry Price*examples* unless u can honestly say your child will have a trust fund when theu get older. Before they are introduced to a boss or supervisor, the resume is seen first. So unique is cute when  they are young but think abt the effect when they are older.

My son that is due in March is going to be named Kristopher Ryan - after his great grandfather - but I didn't pick his name because it was "normal" it was because it had meaning to me and my husband.

My daughter is named Kaydence Marie - which apparently people have an issue with "weird" names or spellings. But her name was spelled "Kay" because it was my mother's middle name and her middle name is her Great Grandmother's name. Since my mother died a year ago and my great grandmother two years before that- I am exceedingly glad that I had named my daughter in a way that had meaning - whether that's "weird" or not I really don't care either way. None of my daughter's friends have ever had an issue with her name or made fun of her for it.

Mainly I'm not a fan of way out there spellings of any name. I work for the public school in my any reason and it is so hard to spell kids names right because five kids with the sane sounding name will spell it differently. But it really isn't my decision what they name their kid. It is just any reason headache.

I like unique names just not a fan when ppl spell em so crazy it doesn't even sound like what they have named em. My babies are Xavier, Quincy & Tatiana
I like and will use if I get lucky enough to have more children
Uriah
Natalia
Nadia
The bottom two are Russian names may not be common here but they are else where and the first is biblical.
A lot of ppl don't like the name I have picked for my baby girl Tatiana I have had ppl tell me it sounds like a black name and that truly makes me mad because one who cares two ur being racist and it's also Russian. I like unique and when we picked Xavier we where trying to find something to go with middle name ray and my husband said O we can name him Xavier and call him x-ray.... Lol and I loved the name so we went with it. Quincy we picked because we again like unique and wanted a name from the letters that you don't see as much so we went thru and loved Quincy. And times have changed these names are what's "normal" now it's almost 2015 get with the program.. .Lol

None of the names that parents in this post want to name their children is weird. However look in the media at celebrity children.  Their are grown men and women emulating what they see on tv and name their children after phrases. Lil tuchi- after a rapper seriously.

I don't think she is narrow minded. She's clearly not talking about cultural names.  The "creative" names you can not find a meaning or even link to a country. There are countries that tell you what you can and cannot name your child, I am happy that most of us don't live in that type of country however, some of the names at ridiculous. I'm one of those people whose name ends in 'isha. I hate it I was glad in elementary school that other people had my name, but as I grew up even though my name can be defined and when broken down has great meaning. I dislike the images that are attached to my name if you search google and I don't have facebook but you can search there to a bunch of pictures with women with the same name bending over showing there t A

I'm a teacher & have seen and heard of some hum-dingers! Shithead (pronounced shih-theed), Le-a (pronounced Le-dash-uh), Abcde (pronounced AB-Sid-dee), twins named Lemonjello (lim-on-juh-low) and Orangejello (Or-ahn-juh-low), and Female (pronounced fih-mal-lee) are some of the ones that make me shake my head! Those are cases where I wish a nurse or someone could have stepped in to help the poor children!

I'm all for unique hippie names like Sunshine, Dream, Stardust, Moon beam, etc. But you better be ready as a parent to really instill some confidence and thick skin in your child cause kids are straight up MEAN. We can justify unique/weird names, and as parents we can say "well they can change it", but kids don't try to understand. They'll pick on you for being fat! They'll pick on you for being adopted! They'll pick on you for having lice first! Hell, they'll pick on you for eating the same lunch twice. That's the part that concerns me. Kids can be so mean to one another. You might have raised your baby right, but that kid that might tease your kid to the point where they kill themselves much bit have had that kind of parenting. And that's the part that scares me the most :(

I'm naming my son King Marlon a lot of people don't approve says it sounds more like a title than a name, but he is my son and that's the name I choose, if when he is grown and absolutely hate it, he is free to change  it to whatever he likes

I have a Taylor, Keagan, Ashtyn, Brady, and soon to be Whitlee. I agree with some of the other moms. When we were young there were a ton of Johns, Jasons, Stephanies, Jennifers, etc. Every generation seems to have a popular pattern of names. With time comes change. I'm sure the older generation before us wasn't too fond of some of the name choices. Poking at the new name trend is just as bad as hearing an elderly person say "back in my day........ this music is garbage.......... we didn't have snow days!"  blah blah blah lol.

@bonnieella20 I think that the fact that you consider different names to be weird Is what many of us women are finding offensive. You may not even realize but you are passing negative judgment on another woman's choice for her own children. It makes you seem narrowminded. Though you may not mean any offense, your post is calling out mothers that think differently than you. You find common to be good and those women that find uniqueness to be good will speak out.

My kids names now are Alicia and Alaina (pronounced Alayna). With this one if its a girl it will be Alyssa and if it's a boy it will be named after his daddy, Javier.

Wow. Didnt know my post would get so much activity. When I said normal or weird names I wasn't meaning it offensively. I just meant different. Lets control our hormones.

Have not had no trouble so far. I have put her in school already and everyone in her class is named Sophia, Sophie, piper, Harper and stuff like that. I know how it feels to be one of many I went to school with a lot of girls that shared my name and the rest were Brittany, Amber, Jessica, jamie and so on. I swear there seemed to be only five girl names for like two years, all I could think was could our parents not come up with something better. I looked baby names up online, I started with my oldest daughters name and it gave me names that would make good sibling names. The names I picked had not been on top for many many years but most of them seemed to be popular the year I picked it. Cynthia is my oldest and I named her after my mom who passed. She has not came across any other kids her age with the same name but lots in their 40-50's. My kids all love their names, I hated mine at that age.

My daughter is named Emily Suzanne. If this one is a girl, she'll be Lillian Grace. A boy will be William "Liam" Earnest IV.

I'm going to name my child something unique as well common names are over taken.. like one said earlier it's like five kids with the same name in the childs same grade... My baby will not just fit in with the same name crowd she will stand out ina good way.. An someone said names should be around five letters even common names have more letters than that.. but I guarantee my child or any future children I have won't ever be named after a car or drink uhh I hate that... But hey people can do what they want it just won't be me..

Not to burst your bubble but there was actually a TV show with 3 sisters, 2 of which were named piper and prudence. 3rd was phoebe. Hope it stays unique for you but you might end up seeing that name more often than you think
