Can you have to many u/s's

Ok I was reading a post and came across a posting stating you can have too many u/s's. I have never heard of this. does anyone have any information on this and if so does it depend on what kind of u/s. I am 16 weeks along and have had 6 already and will be having a 2nd stage one next week. Just a little worried ok more then a little.

vac's as in baby vacs?  im all for the majority of them.  if everyone stopped vaccinating there would eventually be huge outbreaks of the diseases we dont see anymore.  with people moving in to our country there are always disease brought in because they dont have vaccination requirements like we do here.  its hard because you do hear of a few horrific stories that were because of the shots.  i live in an area that has a huge immigrant pop because of the agriculture.  there have been cases here of this or that and i vaccinate my kids because there are chances they could become ill.  research and go with your heart.

tennesseegirl you found the info that is correct.  pretty scary to put a baby through that for no other reason other than we are impatient parents lol.  i just wish i had been able to have her without knowing her sex, i did with my son.

sounds like you have a great responsible dr.

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound test is a radiology technique, which uses high- frequency sound waves to produce images of the organs and structures of the body. The sound waves are sent through body tissues with a device called a transducer. The transducer is placed directly on top of the skin, which has a gel applied to the surface. The sound waves that are sent by the transducer through the body are then reflected by internal structures as "echoes." These echoes return to the transducer and are transmitted electrically onto a viewing monitor. The echo images are then recorded on a plane film and can also be recorded on videotape. After the ultrasound, the gel is easily wiped off.

The technical term for ultrasound testing and recording is "sonography." Ultrasound testing is painless and harmless. Ultrasound tests involve no radiation and studies have not revealed any adverse effects.  Source: http://www.medicinenet.com/ultrasound/article.htm

thank you.... I am just trying to get some information on this. I am sure there are some risk. Heck my whole pregnancy is at risk. due to this I will be having several u/s's. From what my Dr.'s have said we need to take this pregnancy one day at a time. My husband and I thought we where done 2 years ago. Surprise......

I did hear about the amount of radiation has to due with the risk. I am not for sure.

No, you're not being rude. And no, I don't have any statistics to show you. When I was having my kids, there were no ultrasounds (I think they started about a year later) and the term "autism" had never been heard of. Now, ultrasounds are given left and right and sometimes, in my opinion, just for the hell of it. And now autism is on the rise. I do understand the need for u/s in high risk cases.

I don't know for a fact that u/s cause autism, but like I said, just think about it!

thank you for your post. I think your right. When my 11 year old son was a 3rd grader his teacher tried to say he was adhd. I met with our family Dr. which was his Dr since birth. Said that if he can sit and do his work and watch a program he is just a normal active boy. I will be the first to tell you he is a child that I have to spend extra time with  he is the middle child. I would rather spend extra time with him then put him on meds. Don't get me wrong there are some kids/people that are truly adhd. When my husband was a child they said he was adhd and he would never have a office job. Well surprise surprise he was on meds for 6 months and just it put him in another world. his mom took him off the meds after 6 months. He now has his own IT Company. He is a programmer.
I know that there are kids/adults that have this. In my case I am just glad that I just didn't agree with my sons teacher. We did change his class and come to find out he did awesome that year. He is now in Middle School and has A's and B's. He does have lots of energy.

well.. just to be safe and I tend to stay away from microwaves while running...I dont keep my cell phone hooked to my waist..look how long they have been around? and to this day they are still comming out with warnings.. ugh.. whats a person to do????

I would think if you have an ob that is doing alot of them.. they will respond there fine..
but mine.. ugh.. doesnt do them unless he has to.. and would not recommend them. He also told me there is no proof.. but if you dont need it why do it!!

Im sure its very disturbing on both sides.. I want one and cant..lol
and some of you have to have them and worry...  guess there really no answer of right and wrong.. This is where we just have to have faith in our OBs..atleast for now..? or maybe... something to ask the expert forum??? now that would be interesting...

the special ed teacher in our school said that the autism increase is a trend...  10 years ago we were diagnosing those same kids with adhd...  it is not that there are more of them just that our idea of autism has broadened where before we would just consider these people a little off or social inept now we call it asburgers.  It is mostly boys and that is who also mostly had adhd...  I think a lot of the increase is a societal thing....  trying to put a label on everyone that isn't the norm it is not that most have severe autism

its so controversial right now, there are no stays to prove (or disapprove).    i know all drs are different with what they feel is safe, heck i have friends whos drs told them its ok to drink in moderation (dont get me started) or if you cant quit smoking cut back!

some of you had so many u/s so early what was the reason?

there has been an incredible increase in autism,  "add adhd"  ,  there has to be something to that.

Thanks for the info.
The autism rate has also sky rocketed in the last 20 years. Just something to think about.

I am not trying to be rude are mean. Do you know where I can find any statistics on how many mothers had several u/s during there pregnancy. That have children with autism?

Thanks to everyone that have posted. I have been looking for info on this and have found very little. I see my Dr./s next week and will ask. I have a mother in law (best you can have) that is a x-ray tech and also has to go through u/s training. She has said that u/s have been around for over 20 years and they can't link any harm to the baby. If any they identfy birth defects. She did say that the 3D u/s are the newest and have not had time to do any studies on them. I would like to think that my Dr./s would have been up front if the u/s have a history of harming the baby. After all they had no problem telling me all my other risk with this baby. With all this said I will still question them when I go in for a 2 D u/s on Monday.
As my husband said last night. You know I am not worried God has brought us from not able to have a baby to having a healthy preg so far. It's out of our hands and it's up to God. Every pregnancy has a risk.

if you are high risk and you need u/s that outweighs any possible problems that could happen.  ultrasounds are a form of radiation, and the fetus is very sensitive to other forms of radiation - so its possible that they are sensitive to this type of radiation as well.

all articles say that if your dr needs them for diagnostic purposes (keeping an eye on the amniotic fluid, high risk pg, abnormalities) then it needs to be done to assure no problems arise that cant be seen otherwise..

if my dr needed them for diagnostic, id have as many as can be, if not get the few you normally get during your pg and skip the extras.

or do as you want and be happy with your decision lol.  i admit i had a few, i didnt realize the effects that  are possible till recently.  next time i have a baby i will skip the extra u/s that were just for fun.

Thank you Tennesseegirl,
I will be talking to my Dr. I can't imagine any of my Dr.'s not saying anything. I have two Dr.'s that are specialist on high risk patients. I do know that they where doing several u/s because of my risk.

oly.. my ob told me they just havent got all the answers yet on causes of things out there today. and are still doing studies..
He did say in some cases.. It just cant be helped. They need to see the baby. but to do it just for Joy.. he said not to. ?
I would talk with your ob about it and go with what he says..

I am a high risk. 4 m/c and had a cryo ablation done two years ago. Dr's are surprised that I  am so far along. If I can carry this baby till full term it will be as my to dr.'s call it the first Cryo baby that they know about. Cryo ablation = is the freezing of the linning.

Baby is doing just fine and the preg looks like a healtthy one. My Dr.'s want to do as many u/s as they can to make sure the baby is doing good.
So are you saying you dr. has said it would harm your baby.
