I failed my test and i have never had high sugar in my life, noone explained to me to fast before hand, and i had eating and had a soft drink before I went, and ate breakfast as well, i tried to tell them this and they tell me if didnt make a difference???? Now I have to go to a dietician for my pregnancy. Am I wrong to want to take the test again with fasting this time??
Our clinic gives you a sheaf of instructions before the test, I'm sure that is why I fasted. But it is also easy to ignore instructions, especially if handed to you with a whole bunch of other things at the end of your last visit, and the appointment at the lab isn't for a while (so the particular papers get lost). Our clinic also calls you the night before appointments to remind you, maybe that would be the best time to be reminded to fast. Good luck on your 3-hour test.
Thnaks all- I saw the tech today and told her I ate candy bar and also had a big thing of Gatorade before the test- and she looked alarmed.
I DID also tell her the INSTRUCTIONS should be put on the lab slips- so we can read em---and then tehy ahve our signature too that we understand- taht is what my odl lab did
I had my 01hr GTT about a month ago. I was told that I was not required to fast.
When you go in they give you that yucky sugary drink and ask to wait for 1hr an was told "no walking around except to use the washroom, and no food or drinks for 1hr" and they took the blood right after 01hr since the time drank it.
So if you ate the candy bar 15minuts before the blood was drawn i think it would have messed up the test results. Good luck with the next one. don't stress over it now.
(my levels were 7.4 which is pertty up there as higher than 7.8 you are considered diabetic- Although i eat really healthy my family history of diabetes may have been the culprit)
Well, It's been 7 years since my last glucose test, but they did tell me to fast before each one. Nothing but water after midnight the night before. I'm sure eating sugar so close to test time would affect your results. Make sure to get specific instructions before your 3 hour test. Good Luck!
Let us know how you go with the 3 hour test. It is possible to get GD particularly you have family history of diabetes.
the gatorade is high sugar in the amount you've been drinking. better to hydrate with no-sugar drinks.
Btw gd is not a barrier to breastfeeding. I had GD and was on insulin the whole pregnancy. My baby is now 13 months old and we're still going strong. Breastfeeding is excellent for mums with GD as it helps control blood sugar.
When I had my glucose test, I was given strict instructions to fast. I think that eating prior to the test will definitely give wonky results. They will test you again and many women get through the second one with no probs.
Thanks all so much.
Oy- the guilt. I have been drinking a 32 oz of Gatorade each day (low sugar kind) thinking it will help to be REALLY hydrated because of the preterm labor- and now - I just dont want to have hurt my baby in any way. But I couldnt have known if I do have- will let everyone know when I go tomorrow. :)
I agree with the others, it really does sound like the candy, especially if you ate it that recently before the test. You should be fine, and it doesn't sound like you're harming your pregnancy.
I can understand your concern because both my parents are diaetic and of course I don't want to hurt my baby. I had the 1 hour test at 26 weeks. And yes, they did not give me any instructions but for the 3 hour test I went well prepared with all the instructions. I am sure it was the candy and you will be fine
I had the one hour test twice (at 16 and 27 weeks) and was asked not to fast but to have a small breakfast in the morning, which I did - and passed the test each time 3 hrs later.
If you're not sure of what to do, you should retake the test or take the 3hrs one - your ob-gyn should have you retake it anyway because of the failed results. Speak to him/her!
Nope no instructions- didnt ask at the lab either. (My youngest is 11 and cant remmebr on that one- I know I went early morning.)
Somebody should be telling or asking- I guess that has to be me ...???
Didn't they give you instructions to fast, or something like that? Though I don't remember a fasting instruction when I had my 1-hour test, I do clearly remember going out for a huge meal afterward because I was so hungry, and that would be the only reason I can think of that I was starving in the early afternoon when I had the test. If this *is* a test usually administered after a fast, no wonder your blood sugar would read higher than expected.
Thanks for the comment.
I am worried about it. My dad is diabetic- diagnosed in his 60s. I am only worried becuase I want to breastfeed- and I cant really EXERCISE to control GD if I do have it- as on modified bed rest from the preterm labor.
I even feel guilty - already- thinking I could have hurt my baby by eating taht candy bar or sugar cereal for breakfast ....
The doctors really need to tell people if they need to fast or??? Luckily I asked about tomorrows test and what I should/shouldnt eat- and was then told to fast.
Hi , I failed my glucose test the 1st time, as I was not aware and ate Caramel rice cakes 20 mins before taking the test. After failing I had to go back for the joyful 3 hour test and guess what my levels were very low and well within the margin. I think the candy bar caused your spike
