ok.. breast pump question

if you get a pump kit new... can you just buy a used breast pump like the medela one?  If you get the kit is that the only part that needs to be steril?  and the rest is just the motorized equipment?  want to buy the kit of the medela in style which is 46$ and get the pump on ebay what do you think?

I went in halfsies with my sister...my older sis had one she let MANY friends borrow and it finally died after 12 babies LOL..I guess it is personal choice I was OK since it was my younger sister and she only used it for 2 months

There is a cylinder shaped pump that fits onto the motorized actuator.  The actuator is what runs the pump.  The tubes fit into the pump and into the back of the breast shields. The only thing that goes through the tubes is air.  The air is what causes the suction.  The milk goes into the front part of the breast shields and down into the storage containers.

you may want to check in on it befor you buy it.. but I think you could maybe take the used one into the hospital and they would steril it for you.
mrs 5077...
maybe take it with you when you go into labor.. and after the baby is born.. say by the way? could you guys take this and steril it for me? Heck for all they know... It could of been yours from your other children? If I kept mine from back then.. thats what I would do. worth a try..Just for peice of mind to
..I dont think I could use something like that even if I knew the person.. If the package was open.. it was used!!  with my dd.. I had no problem bf.. but couldnt pump worth a darn!! so this time I bought me the medela manual pump for those days I just need some relief, and If I do need to pump.. this will do it.. just not as fast as the electric. lol I dont see Time being an issue when she comes.. so I think this will work great for me.. something you might want to concider too? lol.. when she was around 5 months.. geez. I think I could of squeezed it out with my hands.. like a cow.. lol.. as time goes. it gets easyier and easyier to do.

Hannah,

So the part you rent is just the motorized component... the tubing and everything else comes with the kit?  what does the arm do?  I have never seen one...

The part that you rent doesn't come in contact with anything. It is just a motor with an actuator arm that works the pump.  The kit consists of the breast shields and attaching parts, storage containers, tubes and cylinder pump.

That's a good point, what do they do with the rentals? Maybe they put them through a high tech sterilizer. Makes you say ....hummmmm?

Medela's site also talks about used pumps, but they rent them also.....hummmmmm?

I bought the kit and rented the motor from the hospital.  The kit was around $50 and the monthly rental is $45.

I bought my pump in style on ebay for $89 + $19 shipping. I bought a brand new kit at Target for $24.99. The owner said it had only been used two times and when I received it I was very pleased with the condition that it was in. Still in the box and looked fairly new. Then I started reading on the internet that you should never buy a used breast pump. Now i'm all freaked out. I still have it but am not sure if I want to buy a new one or just keep the one I have. It has everything and looks brand new, the lady even threw in a nursing cover up. I don't know, the site I was reading said that if the mother had bleeding the blood could somehow get in the motor and get into your pumped milk. It's a tough call. Good luck
