1st u/s 6.3 weeks -- no fetal pole or heartbeat

Well, as you can imagine I am just devastated. They said it may be just too dang early so they have scheduled a 2nd u/s for next Friday 9:15am est (for those of you who wish to say prayers). In fact the u/s tech almost wanted to reschedule me before we even started because she said it's just too early and they don't typically see anything for another week.

I don't want any sugar-coated answers to this...do any of you know what this means percentage-wise or liklihood-wise that we will actually have a viable pregnancy? I am trying to prepare myself for both outcomes.

I have the typical pregnancy symptoms; nauseau, sore breasts (although a little less sore than last week, but nipples are now MORE sore and my breasts have definitely grown (sorry for the detail)). They have given me lab requisitions for HCG that I will get today and then Saturday to assess whether the doubling of values occurs. I have had no spotting and only mild and normal menstrual-like cramping that comes and goes.

I know many of you have had fetal pole & heartbeats show at between 5 and 7 weeks but have any of you NOT? Again, I'm such a straight-shooter type gal so please let me know what you've experienced! :0)

because  every woman is different and the norm is always mentioned you should not apply that directly to your case because you have different circumstances. I will pray for you because I worry all the time myself

Since you don't know exactally when you ovulated, and u/s is very dependent on the quality of the machine, it could very well be too early...

All you can do at this point is hope for the best.. thing happy baby thoughts!! hang in there.. sorry for your troubles.

If you were to say 7 weeks or so I might think Ughh. But 6.3?  I had my 1st u/s today, I am 6 weeks 1 day and the sac was measuring 6 weeks. I had a baby and a h/b, here's the kicker, the hb was only 89 BAD BAD BAD... SO, question is, would I have rather have seen no hb or a slow one? We are both in the same worry wart boat. Did you have a sac and what did it measure?

Let us know what your HCG is. So far my is normal but like I said earlier I went for u/s couldn't see anything either. I haven't give up. I didn't at first but something came over me to think positive. If it meant to be it meant to be. Good luck and I'm still hanging in there.

Thanks everyone. I am trying to stay positive. BUT after doing my own research (bad, bad, bad idea) I have learned that in MOST cases fetal pole at least should be evidenced on an u/s by 6.3 weeks. Who knows when ovulation was so I'm just trying to hang tight. I'm going right now for HCG #1 and then will go on Saturday for HCG #2...I'll find out on Monday. So, the earliest I will know anything is Monday and maybe we'll know enough on Monday based on the results to know the outcome.

It is funny (not funny "ha ha") that I am so at peace with God's plan and that if we do lose this pregnancy it was due to chromosomal or genetic anomolies. I would rather let God be Dad to these little beans that didn't quite come together right then for us here on earth, but that being said it doesn't lessen the pain. I've known so many people to have miscarriages (some of them MULTIPLE times) and I've always encouraged them to view the good side. Well screw the good side :0). This does make one more empathetic to the plight of the miscarrying woman, that's for sure.

If by God's good grace this IS a normal pregnancy then we will be thrilled, but it all honesty I am thinking those chances are far below 10% at this juncture.

I went for my 2n u/s today I'm almost 6 wks and they couldn't see anythign either. I've been spotting for a week now and bled some. He couldn't tell me anything except to come back again in a week. Is to early to detect this soon all women are different. With my last pregnancy they couldn't see my son till he was 9 wks!! Just think positive that's what I'm trying to do even thou is nerve wrecking.

Last spring we saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks, 4 days, and my RE seemed suprised to see it that early.  Sadly, I miscarried three weeks later.  So seeing a heartbeat isn't everything.  You might have ovulated late, implanted late, or both.  (I'm beginning to think that doctors overdo it with all of these very early tests, statistics, etc.  Unless they are going to offer treatment to fix a potential problem, is all of this worry over hcg levels, etc. really worth it, when 15% of normal pregnancies have non-doubling hcg numbers?)  There are always exceptions to everything, including ultrasounds, and besides, my understanding is that these early ultrasounds have a 10-day window of error.  I have said a prayer you will have a good report at the next ultrasound!  Keep looking up!

I just want to comment on your post to cpatow. I think saying that "6 weeks is NOT too early" sends an ambiguous message. It's not too early to detect everything, but I've heard of many women where it was too early for THEM. So although it's possible to see the sac, hb, etc at 6 weeks, because ovulation, impregnation and implantaion are all timing factors, it's very individual.

cpatow, I would listen to your doctor for any definative statements. I think your tech was right when they wanted you to come in another week, to see the new scan. Good luck! I'm sure there will be many prayers going your way. :o)

I'm sooooo sorry to hear you weren't able to see anyting on the u/s. I think it's great that you have all those symptoms though. Hold on to that! And hold on to the fact that 6.3 weeks is VERY early, and most women don't have the first u/s done until 10-12 weeks. Probably, to avoid scans like yours... when you can't tell if it's indicative of anything because it's just too early. I had mine at 6 weeks, and I could see the yoke sak, heartbeat, etc. But my HCG levels are really low, and my boobs aren't sore anymore (this really makes me nervous!). So what do I do...... instead of being happy with the u/s I'm worried about my symptoms decreasing, and low HCG numbers. It's sooo hard NOT to worry about something. I think that when you go back in a week, you will see something. Let us know how it goes! I will be thinking about you,
Wendy

Unfortunately the two times they did not see a fetal pole and/or questionable HB for me both ended in m/c.  The one time for me that they did see everything perfectly at 6 weeks turned out perfect and I am still pregnant 17 weeks later and everything is progressing fine.  Are you sure of your ovulation date?  If so, it is not looking good, but if it possible that you ovulated later you could still get good news next week.  6 weeks is definitely NOT too early - in fact if everything is on track they SHOULD see a fetal pole and possibly a heartbeat at that time if your dates are all correct.  Best of luck - I hope you get good news next week!
