1st ultrasound-what to expect?

by sarge1, Mar 04, 2008 08:52PM
tomorrow will be my first ultrasound; I will be 5 weeks 2 days. Last HCG (Monday) was 1272. What can I expect to see?  The ultrasound tech said they will be looking for the sac and fetal pole but it seems that from everything I've been reading, you don't see the fetal pole until 6+ weeks.  I don't want to go in there and have her tell me "sorry, no fetal pole" and get me upset if it really is too early. Or is it based on HCG?
Thanks

I would say if your HCG yesterday was 1272 you may be lucky to see a Sac and Yolk. No heartbeat yet. My HCG a week ago on the 26th was 1576 and on the 28th was 4292. That same day, the 28th, I had an ultrasound and all they saw was a sac and yolk. No fetal poll or heartrate. They also guessed me at about 5w5days.  I have another u/s for March 17th to confirm if this is a viable pregnancy.

Don't get disappointed if you don't have the heartbeat yet, I would say it is too early and I also was told it is usually only after 6 weeks.

Best of luck.

I would agree that it's really early to see a heartbeat at this point but it's possible to see at least the gestational sac.  I know we waited until 7w1d for my first u/s & that's when we saw 'everything' as well as the heartbeat.  Good luck!

I went for my first u/s at 6w 1 and all that was visible was a sac. I stressed about it all weekend, even though the dr. told me it was probably too early.  He sent me back at 6 w 4 days to a better machine and we saw everything!  That was Monday.  What a relief!  I wonder why they're sending you so early.  Don't be disappointed if you don't see much.  I know it's hard to wait, but try not to get too worried.  Good luck!

Gosh, if at all possible, I would have them re-schedule in 1 week so that you can really expect to see a sac, fetal pole and hb. Good luck

I agree. Is there a particular reason why they are doing an ultrasound so early? My doctor's office doesn't schedule until a minimum of 8 weeks.

Thanks everyone!  It went well this morning, I got to see the sac, not much else. She admitted it was too early to see more; I guess they just wanted to make sure the sac was in the uterus (because I did IVF, and there is a higher risk of ectopic). But, there it was, right were it's supposed to be!  I go back next Monday for another scan, which will be 6 weeks. Which I understand may also be a little early still, so I'll try not to freak out if they still don't see much.

That's great news! You'll be surprised what a difference a whole week will make.

I also had u/s @ 6 weeks 1 day & no embryo (just gestational sac & yolk sac). Went back at  7 weeks 2 days and saw heartbeat so don't worry and don't expect too much so early.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Can't wait to hear the news next Monday.

You and I are really close in schedule--I am exactly 6 weeks pg today. My first u/s is a week from tomorrow, March 13, and I will be 7 weeks, 3days. I am glad you posted because I was wondering if they were waiting too long to do my first u/s.

I am glad everything seems to be moving along smoothly. Congratulations :-)

Oooo, how exciting for you!  I go for my third blood test tomorrow and then the nurse said she will give me "schedule" for the next few weeks.  I was wondering when the first u/s would be!!!!  I'm five weeks today.
