2nd HCG test still rising but not doubling

I went in for my first HCG test on week 5 day 5 (day 27 of the pregrnancy) and my hcg was 9220.  I went  back on week 6 day 0 (day 29 of the pregnancy) and my HCG was 13187.  It's still rising, but it did not double.  Should I be concerned about this?  My doctor didn't seem to be, although he did mention that it didn't double.

He dosn't think we need to test again, and is planning to see me in two weeks for my first ultrasound.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Honestly, I am not sure what I would have done without finding this website.  I have learned so much and I have really come to understand that it's not just me.  It has really been good for me to have an extended community out there of people who understand and have been there.

I'm hoping that we'll find some answers through all of this, so maybe we'll come to understand why this happens or what we can do to help it not happen again.

Thank you for your thoughts and your kind words.

You are all so wonderful.  I'm still waiting for the miscarriage to take place.  I spoke with my doctor today and he called ina prescription for cytotec to hopefully get things moving.

This is our second pregnancy loss, and they are going to go through the whole gammet of test for recurrent pregnancy loss (although they don't usually do that until after three losses).  I am a DES daughter, meaing that my mother took a drup while I was inutero to keep from miscarrying, which was banned in 1971 due to the defects it causes in the children.  I am just beginning to look into that.

I'm so sorry for all of you who have gone through this.  I believe in hope and I have faith that when the time is right everything will work as it should.    I really thought I had prepared myself for this pregnancy to fail (protecting myself by not getting my hopes up), but when I saw the baby and then realized there was no heart beating, I realized that there is no way to prepare yourself for that.

My husband is wonderful and very much my stabilizer.  He helps me to stay strong.

Good luck to all.  I will check back to see how everybody is doing.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I don't know what your situation is (first MC or not, any other children, issues TTC, etc.)  but many women on this forum have been through miscarriages.  I had two, my last one was Sept 1st at 10 weeks.  The saddest part for me was seeing the US at 10 weeks - seeing the empty sacs (it was twins) - and no heartbeats.  No one knows what you are feeling.  MCs are very, very personal - and always different for each person - but we know how we felt - and it just plain sucks.  No way else to say it.  Again - I am so sorry.

This pregnancy is ending.  I went for ultrasound at 8 weeks 1 day and the gestational sac and embryo measured at 5 weeks 5 days.  There was no heart beat.  We went back at 8 weeks 4 days and the gestational sac has begun to collapse in on itself and the little embryo is beginning to break apart.

My first HCG test would have been taken the day my baby stopped growing.  My second was two days later.

Waiting for the miscarriage.

Thank you - I feel better.  I found a source on WebMD that gave me this information (from one of the Doctor's)

Within the first 2-4 weeks after fertilization, HCG usually doubles every 48-72 hours. That usually corresponds to HCG levels below 1200 IU. From 1200-6000, the HCG usually takes 72-96 hours to double. Above 6000 IU, the hCG often takes over four days to double.

So, I think everything is ok.  I hope.  I know I'm extra nervous simply because of the loss we had last year.  I'm hesitant to even think of myself as pregnant, isn't that crazy?
Thanks again,  this site is a Godsend.

yeah your numbers look good and the difference of an hour or 2 can also make a difference I have heard so try not to worry toooo much especially if your DR isn't.  good luck

I was told the numbers take longer to double once they are over 2000 or so.  Your numbers sound great!

Since your number is really good and it is supposed to double every 48 to 72 hours, i wouldn't worry about it.  Yours did't double after 48 but it probably would have after 72.

My dr tested my numbers from 4wk2d to 5wk2d.. after that we did not test, so I don't know what my number did in the 6wk time frame.. i do remember reading that they do start to slow down at some point but I'm not sure when.. If the u/s was good, I would focus on that and expect the best...  Please let us know how your next u/s goes... I'll be looking for good news!!

Take care, hannah

you know, I don't know what to say to you other then, I found this web site and i found the information very interesting..

HCG Levels during Pregnancy
Days Past Ovulation
Normal HCG Levels: MIU/ML

7 Days                  5-50 (avg. 14)
14 Days                5-50 (avg. 21)
21 Days                5-50 (avg. 42)
28 Days              10-425
35 Days              19-7,340
42 Days         1,080-56,500
7-8 weeks       7,650-229,000
9-12 weeks    25,700-288,000
13-16 weeks  13,300-254,000
17-24 weeks    4,060-165,400
25-40 weeks    3,640-117,000

I've always heard that it really doesn't matter what the number is really as long as it doubles every 2 - 3 days, but.. the question is.. what if it doesn't double but it still with in normal range? I mean.. like you.. at day 27 your hcg level was 9220 but the average for 28 days is 10 - 425.. that means that you are way over. then on the 29 your hcg was 13187 didn't double in 2 days but, would it have been in 3 days?

It's all very tricky to me! Like mine for instance.. I used the hcg calculator and it said I double every 39.4 hours or 1.6 days, does that mean I ALWAYS will double in that or could I double then or between then and 72 hours?

Do you get what I am saying?? I think it's just to drive us crazy!! I would say that if your doctor isn't worried try not to worry. If you get some clear answers I will be very interested!! Good luck to you!!
