40 and 1st time prego...HCG "low"?

40 and 1st time prego...HCG "low"?

Hello Ladies!
I am almost 41, never tought i could get prego so fast at my age (dust off those eggs please sir)! BF and I tried ONCE to conceive 1 and half weeks ago.  BOOM...guess what , I am pregnant!
My last period was July 26th, I conceived between August 5th-8th.
My HCG was tested August 17th and was 28.5.
Was told it was very low, "a spit in the wind" (?) and should re-test on Wed.
Should I be concerned? Now I am freaking. Anyone got through this... with words of wisdom?
Thank you!

I never had my hcg tested that early, but it doesn't sound like too low a number, considering you are so newly pregnant and the numbers vary widely:

3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml

I've read on this & other forums of initial numbers being as low as 10. What matters is how quickly the numbers go up. One test isn't enough to do anything but confirm the pregnancy! Ideally your doc should have you test 48-72 hours later and compare.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Thanks Ruby.  I did 4 digital PT's  on Sunday and Monday (I was only a week prego!), all positive, and had my DR order the blood test immediately. I don't see much about "VERY early HCG tests" so maybe I am getting carried away.

We will know on Thurs as I have my re-test on Wed...:-)

Thanks hun!

Actually if you read some of the post on here you will find quite a few that had low hcg results the first blood test however they doubled every 48-72 hours and that is what counts.  Hope to see 58 or higher for tomorrow's numbers by the same lab around the same time.

If I remember correctly adgal's first number was low and her pregnancy is still going great.

This comes up so often here.  At 3 weeks pregnant, that number is just fine.  Udbe is right, my first no. was 33 (and I was a bit further along then you).  I am now almost 17 weeks and carrying a healthy baby boy.  All is just fine.  They tell you it's low because it's early, and at this stage it's hard for them to say if it's on the way up or down.  I honestly wouldn't worry.  I am betting your next bloodtest shows a bit of a jump.  Mine went from 33, then a week later was 1000.  Congrats on your pregnancy and wishing you a healthy 40 weeks. Oh, and we are almost the same age.  I turned 40 last january, and this babies edd is 1 day after my 41st!!

Congratulations on your BFP!!  I agree with what the other women were posting here; you tested early and the important thing is to see the levels double.

I, too, recently got a BFP and started getting my levels tested since last Thursday, so I understand the worry about the numbers.

Congrats!

I nearly gave myself an anxiety attack trying to make sense of the HCG levels and the "doubling rate" -- my numbers were low and slow.  DH finally banned me from the internet, thank goodness!  I'm 19 weeks now and am a firm believer that as long as the numbers go up, the stress level should stay low!

I am so happy for you!  Please keep us posted as I need some encouragement right now.  I, too, am almost 41 (when is your birthday?) and got pregnant the first try some time between July 14-18.  Unfortunately, it looks like my little one is not going to make it:(  Do you happen to know what your FSH was (if you ever even had it measured)?  Congratulations again!

I agree wholeheartedly with Yoga!  I drove myself crazy this time around with HCG levels.  They tripled the first set which was great, but then only went from 1000 to 4000 in a week. That's a doubling time of only 83 hours or something like that.  I was also bleeding (bright red!) and was convinced I was losing this one too. Some of the other ladies here will tell you...I was a basket case!  Well, I am now 17 weeks with a healthy little boy and all is well.  Lesson for me, dont' try to interpret my own tests. As long as baby is there and has a heartbeat, all is well!!

Pam is 45 and just delivered a healthy perfect little girl.  She had her son at 43 I belive, and he too is healthy and beautiful.  She had a pretty uneventful pregnancy as well.  She is pretty busy with her little girl these days, but still pops on fairly often.  She is one of the CL's so has a pink flower next to her name.  Message her, I am sure she would be happy to tell you her story...both babies were conceived naturally (sorry Pam, giving out the details for you...lol).  She is a wonderful lady and for me very inspirational (I will give birth at 41 and fully intend to try for no. 2!)  Good luck, sounds like things are going well for you!!
