7th week, HCG did not double

by ABCD424, Oct 22, 2009 11:27AM
I am 35. I am in the 7th week. HCG went from 29000 to 36000 in 48 hours (25% increase).  The nurse practitioner is convinced I should schedule a D&C immediately. I think I should at least wait for another ultra sound (schedule for end of 8th week).  Should I wait? Do I harm myself for future pregnancies if I am really about to miscarry and don't do anything about it?
Does progestrone supplement help here in any way?

If I remember correctly, I don't think the hcg doubles once the numbers get that high.  What did your previous u/s show?  If it were me, I wouldn't schedule a D&C until you give it a little time.  Do you have reasons to think you might be miscarrying like cramping and bleeding?  Hang in there, my doctor doesn't even do hcg counts on me because ultrasounds are much more accurate.   I'm so sorry you have to be dealing with this.  Try to hang in there and don't do anything you don't want to do.  Take care!

What is with all of these recommendations for IMMEDIATE D&Cs!!!

And this?  Based on HCG numbers?

I'm sorry but I am alarmed by reading so many stories about u/s not showing a heartbeat or seeing a sac & no baby (blighted ovum, diagnosis, right away!) & then the Dr or MW suggests a D&C, IMMEDIATELY - even the same day.  Why not do a follow-up in a week or two?  Why not allow the miscarriage to occur naturally if it is going to occur at all?  Healthy babies can hide!

Read these stories...

Please!  To everyone in their FIRST trimester who is told, after one u/s, blood test, etc. that they need to schedule an immediate D&C:
1. get a second opinion.
2. request a 1-2 week follow-up
3. miscarry naturally & have a D&C after if necessary
I know that I can't give medical advice.  I just think that jumping to D&Cs so quickly could be dangerous!

I had 2 ultrasounds.  1st said blighted ovum.  MW wanted to do blood tests & wait.  While waiting I started to miscarry - during, I had u/s #2 - said blighted ovum.  Went home to finish miscarrying & passed a LARGE baby!!  3 inches long, 1.5 inches wide!!

How could they have missed that!

Please wait on the D&C & get another opinion!

Thanks for the warnings. I scheduled another ultrasound for end of week 8. First U/S at 6 week 1 day showed no fetus or heartbeat. I have absoloutely no reason to believe I could be miscarrying - no cramps, no bleeding.

Sounds good to me.  And I am so sorry for venting here on your post.

I went in for my 1st u/s at 10w3d because of I had been spotting for 3 days.  If you have no symptoms of a problem & your u/s was at week 6 (still pretty early), I think that it was very irresponsible not to mention unprofessional of the NP to even suggest that there is a problem.  Stressing you out is not good for anything!

I have read stories at the Miscarriage Misdiagnosis website where nothing is seen or heard at 10 weeks, the Mom insists on waiting & BAM!  At 12 weeks there's a baby with a strong heartbeat.

U/s are a very accurate tool but by no means perfect.  Hey!  And don't forget our hearts & intuition.  They are very powerful as well.

Namaste!  Good Luck!  And keep us posted!!

HCG levels do not double in 48 hours when they are that high. Doubling time begins to slow after 1200 and the time to double increases until the level out (and eventually drop a abit).   They are no longer a good indicator of a viable pregnancy (at this stage).  The best way to know for certain is ultrasound.  I find it a bit irresponsible for her to recommend a D&C based on that, and no heartbeat at 6W.  Heartbeats will typically show up between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 weeks.  At that early stage much can depend on the skill of the tech and the quality of the equipment.  You will not do any harm to your body waiting for that second ultrasound.  I am sorry you are going through a stressful time and I hope all works out well for you.

Hello,
I am agreeing with the other women here. HCG levels do not double in 48 hours when they are that high.  I am upset at that practitioner for recommending  an immediate D&C.  Absolutley get that second ultrasound.

I hope and pray that all is well for you and your baby.

We had the second US yesterday - baby measured 8w1d right on track, with a strong heartbeat (163) Thank you for your responses.

AWESOME!!!  That is SO great to hear!!!

Did you happen to get a chance to inform that NP?  As you can imagine, I would be making quite an issue about it if I found myself in your position.

I am so HAPPY for you!!!!!

Namaste!

Girl, I am so happy that your little one is ok.  You should tell the doctor to get rid of that NP for telling you to get an immediate D & C how dare she.  You should show her the picture of your u/s and stick it right up her butt.  I am sorry but that is such ********.  You don't need that kind of stress right in the beginning of your pregnancy.  These docs and NP you think should no better than to stress you out like that.  The just have to cover their own *****.  Thankfully you waited and your baby is just fine.  If I were you I would look for a new doctor.  That's just my opinion though.  Enjoy your pregnancy and don't let the docs scare you like that.  Keep us posted!!!  Good luck!!!

I would never want to work with that nurse again!  I really hope you commented on her impromptu diagnosis with your Dr.  Get her outta there!  How many other women has she said that to and destroyed there lives?
