Anyone had or have prenatal depression?

by maybebaby29, May 28, 2008 08:22AM
Hi,

I've had depression/anxiety on and off most of my life but haven't had it too bad in a few years. However, now that I'm pregnant, it is coming back? I know it's hormones, etc. I'm not thinking anything sad. I couldn't even go to work yesterday and today I forced myself. The OB is aware since I've had a history and since it's only been 2 days in a row I'm not alarmed. I am, however, frustrated and mad because I don't want to stress out the baby. I dont' want to go on meds either. Any tips on how to pull out of it?

i think if you have had a history of anxiety/depression, pregnancy would definitely make a difference in the symptoms.  my 12 year old suffers with this and i do notice a difference around her period, so i would think pregnancy could make it even worse.  i know you don't want to take meds, but don't discount the help it could give you, i am sure a doctor wouldn't give you anything not safe in pregnancy.  you shouldn't have to suffer.

I've had the same problem, though until this pregnancy, no trouble in about 10 years.  This pregnancy has definitely culminated in me being very anxious, prone to cry a lot, and insomnia.  The insomnia is the worst part, so the doctor tried to put me on Wellbutrin (which is safe during pregnancy).  I decided not to take it because Wellbutrin is GREAT for depression and for people who don't want to get out of bad, but horrid for anxiety and insomnia.  Not sure why she prescribed it, but I told her my fears later and she agreed.

No other med is as safe as Wellbutrin during pregnancy, but there is no evidence they are harmful either.  It's just sort of an unknown.  My doc said if things get bad, it's better to take meds because freaking out is much worse for the baby than the meds probably would be.  I don't think they'd want you to take them until after the 1st trimester though.

For me, I've just tried to take my ipod with me and listen to relaxing music, take warm baths, and allow myself to cry on DH's shoulder.  I've also just found talking with friends and DH helps.  We're in the midst of trying to buy a house right now, so I'm VERY stressed, and this pregnancy has been hard on me so far.  I feel your pain!

Thanks. I'm better today. Just bad for two days. I read that 9 weeks = horrible emotions so maybe it was "normal" but seeing I'm predispositioned, there is always a concern. I'm sure DH going to Vegas for a bachelor party isn't helping (grrrr).
