Baby's head measuring big

by AshleysMom, Mar 27, 2008 01:37PM
Hey Ladies:

Just got back from my doc appointment.  I don't know if you recall my post from a few weeks ago, but I had an ultrasound and my baby's head was measuring I think at 33 weeks or so, while the rest of him measured more like 30 to 31 weeks. They ruled out hydrocephalus and both the doc who did the ultrasound and my OB say everything is normal, but I can't help freaking out a bit.

They did not schedule any additional ultrasounds or tests or anything.

Anybody else have this happen?  Thanks.

P.S.  For those of you who don't know, I did have an amnio and all is normal.

Sweetheart, my daughter's head was SO big it led to me not progressing in labor because she never dropped. Her head was HUGE...also not hydrocephalus.

She's an adorable, normal although big-headed in other ways 9-year old now. I wouldn't worry, however if you DO worry (as wel all do w/ our little growers) certainly ask your OB or even your pediatrician.

I'm sure it's just fine or they would have ordered more follow-ups.

I agree, not to worry.. my son had a head so huge when he was 3 weeks he had to have 2 eeg's.. OH that is so painful for such small babies! His head was BIGGGGG!! Scared me, my ob doctor, and his pedi! All turned out just fine and he is a healthy bright 10 1/2 years old today.

Thanks Ladies:

Hard not to stress.  I need to keep off the Internet (except for this awesome site of course).  Now I have myself all freaked out about Autism.  Apparently a big head can be a sign.  Ignorance is bliss, I tell you...

I do agree that they would have ordered other tests if they thought something might be fishy.  Man I can't wait for the next 7 weeks to be over!

Best to all.

My doctor told me that this can be due to bones not be fused together yet.  The baby's head is still...flexible?  I guess you could say that.  My baby's head was measuring big but my Dr. says it's from the way she's sitting, I guess it's getting compressed a little.  I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.  I know, not easy to do.  I wish I could take my own advice.

My ds too had (or has - LOL) a really big head.  Thank God he grew into it - he's now 6'4" but he was a scary sight 23 years ago for me anyways.  I'm sure everything's fine!
