CVS vs Amniocentisis

Im 36yrs old. Im 12 weeks pregnant and we just did our NT test.  We did not get the results yet but if its bad then we choose to do Amnio.  Im so afraid of amnio, as i am on lovenox and i just hate to know that a test would hurt my baby.

Anyone else in the same boat

I was 40 when I had my son, and my NT/bloodwork results came back 1:13 for downs syndrome.  I opted for amnio over CVS, mainly because by the time I got my results, it was too late for CVS.  CVS is typically performed at around 13 weeks.  If memory serves me correctly, amnio is performed around 16 weeks.

Birds has done a great job explaining her experience with CVS, so I will tell you about mine with amnio.  It too was relatively painless.  It was scary to think about, and the needle used was intimidating to look at, but the procedure itself was quick and less painful then a freezing needle at the dentist.  Much like Birds described, there was some mild cramping and I too took it easy (and let DH baby me..lol) for a day or so.  I had no problems at all.

There is a certain element of risk associated with both tests.  I believe the number generally given is that there will be complications in 1:400.  I did a lot of research into the clinic performing my test and asked a lot of questions.  I felt very confident that they were very experienced and their risk of complication was more like 1:1000.  So I felt good about proceeding.

Choosing to have CVS or amnio has nothing to do with what you would decide based on the outcome.  I can tell you that I personally would not have terminated.  But, I did want to know.  A dear friend of mine on here also had amnio, found out her daughter did in fact have downs syndrome, chose to have the baby and had the rest of her pregnancy to prepare and research, as well as get proper help in place.  So it is not always about termination (although I never judge those who choose that...I respect everyone's decision).

Anyway, hope this helped a little for you.  I know, its a hard decision to make and a very personal one.  I wish you well.

Thank you all for your input. I get my results next week.  WE did ask the dr. about the measurements,he said everything looks good--so just waiting for 3/11 for blood work results...hopefully we dont have to do amnio, im going to be too late for CVS.

Its a huge decision to terminate or keep the baby... i guess we will decide when we get to that point.

thank you!

Congrats on your pregnancy!  Did you at least get the NT measurement?  Did your OBGYN encourage CVS or Amnio?  if the measurement is within the normal guidelines (I beleive less than 3.0mm) then there may not be any need for an invasive test.  if, however, the measurement is borderline and then once you get your blood test back it is an elevated ratio, then you might want to opt for testing.  Like trying43 said, some people have no need to test because it wouldn't change the outcome.

i did have CVS at about 13 weeks and it is a fairly painless and easy procedure.  A little cramping afterwards and then you just take it easy for about 24 hours.  good luck to you and hopefully you won't need to do any of these tests afterall!

I was 36 when i got pg.  I did the NT only and no other testing because it would not change anything for me.  I didnt want to take any risks.  I was 37 when i had her and all was well.  Good luck
