Changing baby diaper

by moakley, Feb 25, 2008 06:05PM
I will be a first time mom and my question is when changing babys diaper do you use desinex at every change?   I know that 12 years ago my sister did this with her son, but is it different with a girl, which is what I am having.   I would love to hear everyones thoughts on this subject and if they put used the cream or not regardless of diaper rash.  Thanks.

You may want to try a few different brands of diaper cream to see what works best for your baby. The A&D with the blue label worked best for mine, as well as the Burt's Bees diaper cream. Desitin made my babies cry as soon as I applied it, so I tossed that one right away.

My first seem to get diaper rash more often than my second baby. I used diaper cream whenever their tushie looked a little red. If there was no red or pinkness, I'd skip it. Seemed to work fine for them.

Another key to a healthy bottom is the kind of diaper you use. We stuck with Pampers Swaddlers then Cruisers. Huggies and Luvs leaked and Pampers Baby Dry made their tushies red. Again, you may want to try a few brands and see what works best for your baby. Every baby is different, so it would be difficult to say ahead of time what may or may not work best. Good luck!

I only used it when there was the first sign of redness.. pink at that matter. me personally I only used balmex.. it was the only thing that would clear my dd up in no time. all the others seem to cause worse or not clear up as fast. She had a bad spert when she would be on antibotics they would always cause a diperrash on her.

also when she starts table foods.. they get intolerances... spelling ? which diaper rashes are a good first sign. so I wouldnt reccomend putting it on everytime.

there is one out there ? I think it was desitin. but omg.. the menthol burns.. dont use that one... lol  I had a rash from pads one month and put that stuff on me and yikes... poor baby... I guess right there is your answer... try it on yourself first.. smile... or take my word for it and use balmex.

Thanks for all your responses.  I will definitely stay away from Desinex, or however you spell it.  I didn't know if by having a girl it could cause a yeast infection by using some sort of the cream to protect from diaper rash.  My sister just used it regardless of if a rash was present or not kind of like a preventative measure. Anyone else have a good brand they like?

I like Burt's Bees and it's all natural!!

Since you are applying the cream to the tush and outside skin areas, it should not cause any vaginal problems since you would not be applying to the inside areas.

Just make sure to gently cleanse the inside delicate areas, especially after a bm and all should be fine. (We use the unscented gentle wipes and those worked well.)

We also use Boudreaux's Butt Paste (www.buttpaste.com). Funny name but good stuff too!

I'm not sure if all hospitals are the same, but ours provides baby care sessions before you and baby leave the hospital. They go over bathing, fingernail clipping, aspirator usage, diaper changing care, taking temperature, etc. Ask questions and take notes so you have something to refer to after you are home too.

Tennesseegirl . . . I didn't know some had menthol in them. Good to know. We've never tried Balmex and after the Desitin scare I just stuck with the ones that worked instead of trying any more. I might have to try it with this baby. Thanks!

I only used diaper rash meds when my DD's little butt started getting red.  I wouldn't use it unless there's a need.

Iam with you AshleysMom, I had my youngest about 2 yrs ago and was told in the hospital to only use it when needed. As for wipes, I was told to use a warm wash cloth for the first 2 weeks, not wipes. I have a friend whom just gave birth and was told the same thing. I guess its whatever your comfortable with, I am gona stick to this regimen for #4, I think. Good Luck!!!

I didn't find my dd had any reactions to Desitin. It's just kind of a white mess. For diaper rash I'm going to have to recommend Aquafor. It's pricey but is clear and works well. My dd has also had a yeast rash that they recommend using Lotrimin or if it gets bad enough will give you a prescription for Nystatin.

I would only use it if they have a rash and I'd put baby powder instead if no rash...And remember with girls you wipe front to back never back to front...if you do you could cause infection .

I think these days they steer you away from the baby powder because it just absorbs the moisture and keeps the butt wet :)

humm so much for listening to my mom....

I live by good ole' vaseline.  I used that everytime I changed my daughter's diaper, and she had very VERY minimal rashes, and til this day, I still think she only got the rashes after staying over grandparents houses or something like that (don't think they were as careful as I was) but vaseline, always worked for me.  The one time I remember her having a rash, I tried desitin stuff and that stuff was SO hard to come off, that I didn't use it again, I felt like I was going to scrub her skin off trying to get that stuff off........so the good ole' vaseline never let me down.

HA HA HA, sorry Brandi. I have a whole tub of baby powder that I would love to douse my baby in just for the sweet smell!! But I don't remember if it was the pediatrician or the hospital that was saying that about the moisture and keeping the bottom wet...
I agree to about the vaseline. The Aquafor is just like Vaseline, I should check the ingredients. I'm probably paying for the name..

Baby powder, yea.. and also studies have found the baby gets too much of it in their lungs. You just have to be aware of that and be carful of the fumes. Its a shame... It smells soo good.
