Clomid/Ovulation Induction when ov on your own

Hello fellow 35+er's.  I don't know if any of your can speak to this question.  I am 39.  Just had my 3rd consecutive miscarriage within 8 weeks. No kids yet.  Every test in the book shows everything is normal.

This last pregnancy we did progesterone suppositories and baby aspirin (along with pre-natal vitamins, extra 2mg of folic acid a day and 50mg of thyroid meds)

We're still waiting for lab results from tissue testing on this last miscarriage.   But my RE has suggested possibly doing ovulation induction along with Clomid next time.  The way I understand, he would want me to take the clomid.  We'll monitor thru us to check follicles.  And do HCG shots to induce ovulation.  Then my hubby and me will have intercourse.

I have regular periods.  Ovulate on my own.  And we always get preg right away.  The first or second try.

So my question is-  I am a little unclear how this routine would help someone like me, who ovulates on my own?  Does it have more to do with helping the eggs mature prior to release?  I will definitely get a better answer from my RE during our next visit, but I was curious if anyone had any thoughts on that???

Thanks girls.  Kris.

Well girls,  by way of update I just got the results from the tissue test from the d&c and it showed normal female. Ugh!  Kinda frustrating because we don't know if my cells contaminated it, or if it truly was normal female conception.

I suppose on the bright side, if we assume it was from products of conception then I guess I'm supposed to feel a little more confident going forward.  My RE says if it was from the conception and not my cells, than there is a slightly increased chance that my next pregnancy will carry to term.  But again, we'll never really know.

And even so, the next preg can still be random chromosomal abnormality or normal and still miscarry.

I am still contemplating on doing the clomid or femera along with injections and us along the way to measure and monitor follicles.  RE says it will give me more eggs to work with, thereby increasing chances that one will be good.  This last time we just did progesterone suppositories and baby aspirin.

Has anyone ever had normal female come back from tissue testing?? Just curious.

Hello again...i know the m/c are hard.  I've been through 5 myself, and I'm 100% sure that they were due to advance maternal age and nothing else.  I started trying to have a baby again at about age 40years - crazy i know...but I knew going in that there was a high chance of miscarriage.  I don't know that makes it a lot easier, but i knew what I was up against.  I did get fed up with all the miscarriages esp since it was a race against time.  I guess it's a personal decision, but there is hope lots of women do get their later in life miracle baby.  It's just what you're willing to put up with and how much of a risk you want to take.  We ended up going for the "for sure" thing or at least something with better odds and went with donor eggs.   But if that option weren't available to up I would have a kept on trying. I am excited about having a baby in the house again.  My youngest is 14.

Thanks for the explainer.  It sounds like my RE has a similar feeling as yours.  I am 39 with three mc.  So I think he is being sensitive to my needs and doing what he can to help me get that good egg sooner than later.  I guess it's just basic statistics.  The more eggs you have, the better your chances that one will be good.

But I suppose there is still a chance that all the eggs could be bad.  I guess there are no guarantees with this stuff.  If there were, someone should patent it and get rich fast LOL.

Congrats to you.  I'm not sure what PO means-  I assume pregnant.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

1st preg ovulated on my own, had IUI, but MC at 14 weeks. so 2nd preg I had clomid but no IUI and MC at 8 weeks. 3rd preg was both clomid and IUI but it was anueploid. so now i just took injectables to get as many eggs in one shot as i can, as the others have said - it is only to get you the good one. my doc just wants to take the aggressive approach now since i am 38 & had 3 MCs. now i am 5 days PO and wondering if i got lucky.

That is soooo refreshing to hear.  Thank you and congrats.  So, you didn't do any shots along with the clomid??

Our situations are very similar.  I had 5 unexplained m/c's all before 12 weeks and I am now 35 (3 when I was 30, 2 when I was 35).  I too get pregnant very easiliy - first try every time.  I was put on clomid, progesterone, baby asprin, and 74mcg of thyroid medication (I am now up to 88 mcg's).  On the second round, I became pregnant.  Everything has gone perfectly.  The dr.'s thinking was that I had some older eggs that weren't healthy.  The theory was that the clomid would make more eggs viable and hope that the stronger healthier eggs would perservere.  I am now 33 weeks with a perfectly healthy little girl.  clomid worked for me...

Hey guys.  Thanks for responding so quickly!

Good question Deb.  I seem to be ovulating regularly on cycle day 11.  My LH surge is on day 10.  It has been mentioned to me that I might be ovulating a little early, thereby producing an "immature" egg, one that is not fully developed.

YvetteY, great thoughts.  And nice clear explanation too.  The HCG injectibles he is suggesting would be for three days.  The day of my LH surge, three days after that, and three days after that.

I see what you guys mean about Clomid being a starting block.  And my RE taking a little bit more aggressive with the shots.

But the huge issue with me is I really really can't continue to handle these miscarriages.  I certainly don't want to do something that would harm my health, but at the same time, I am really prepared to do something a little more aggressive at this point.

I already tried a "low level" approach with baby aspirin and suppositories.  I'm just ready to get a little more serious.

Again, thanks for the great comments.  Keep them coming if anyone else wants to chime in!  Please.  Thanks.  Kris.

Hello Kris..

Not sure I agree 100% with your doctor's protocol...personally....I like the clomid in conjunction with injectibles for a couple of days....but here's the scoop...due to your age you've probably got a bunch of eggs that are poor quality.  This is a bit more agressive approach then trying to do it on your own (they way mother nature intended).

By using the clomid, you will have more eggs to work with each cycle...thereby hopefully getting a good one egg that will turn into a good embryo which will result in a take home baby.

My GF just turned 40 and she's been TTC.  She's had 5 miscarriages, but this cycle she did femera (like clomid) and a couple of days of follistim.  She got five follicles which theorhetically should be ideally 5 eggs and got pregnant this month.

So she worked with 5 follicles, maybe 3 to 4 eggs versus just one egg.   She however had IUI in the morning and just for added measures did the BD in the evening.  But the IUI isn't really that necessary esp if your DH has a normal sperm count.

The protocol your RE is suggesting is just a more aggressive approach.  YOu will have a better chance of getting pregnant with more eggs than with just one egg in just trying it without any help.

It's good you're getting pregnant right away, problem is the miscarriage and that's happening more than likely because the eggs that fertilzed were probably duds (off poor quality).   Unfortunatley TTC at your age is something that's probably going to need some added assistance, persistance and strength of heart and you will hopefully get that good egg.    I'd be a bit more agressive, however, than just clomid by itself, talk to your doc about doing a couple days with follistim as well in conjunction with the clomid.  Good luck!! :)

Hi, I am not an expert butlike you I have been put on Clomid. I was ovualting on my own and did manage to get pregnant on my own last year but miscarried at just over 13weeks.

Do you know what day you were ovualting on by yourself? I was ovualting too early so the eggs were not maturing enough on their own... on the clomid I am ovulating CD14-15.

I pay for my treatment privately and have been told by my clinic that clomid is usually the starting block for women they are trying to help conceive and then they work from ther.

Good luck - I hope it works for you
