Does steriod drugs taken in pregnancy affects child after birth

by jkathiresan, May 31, 2008 02:20AM
My relative is suffering from Wheezing problem for the past 1 week who is pregnant for the past 5 months. She is in 20th week of pregnancy.

Since the medicines given by gynaecologist for her wheezing problem is not worked out for her, we approached and consulted a Chest physician who gaves the following medicine

1) Pulmocef 250 - day and night - 8 tablets - 4 days
2) Omnacortil 10mg - day and nigh - 8 tablets - 4 days
3) Phenergan 10mg - night alone - 4 tablets - 4 days

After taking these medicines now everything is under the control. Now she didn't get wheezing problem after that.

When we again go back to gynaecologist for continuing treatment for pregnancy. gynaecologist scolded us like anything and said you have taken steriod medicines which will affect the child after birth. She also taken a letter from us stating that if anything happens to the child after birth that she is not responsible for us. My relative put the signature in that letter.

We shocked in hearing this.

Is gynaecologist said is right or the Chest physician is right. We are confused with both of their statement.

1) Who is right in this case?
2) Is the above medicines should be taken or should not be taken in Pregnancy?
3) Will it severly affect the child after birth? what are the consequences of the above medicines?
4) Does it have any birth defects for the child?

Please kindly answer in detail after analysing. We need your help urgently. Please. Please send an email to me.
