Enlarged Yolk Sac

I'm 42 and 6-7 weeks pregnant.  Ultrasound 2 weeks ago showed enlarged yolk sac (5mm) and very small fetal pole with no cardiac activity.  Tech called it a missed miscarriage.  I went in last week to confirm the loss, and the fetal pole had grown to 6w1d and had heart rate of 122, but the yolk sac measured 8mm.  My OB said that with normal cardiac activity, she doesn't worry about yolk sac size; however, my RE said it's likely a bad sign.  I don't know what to think and am beside myself with worry awaiting another scan on Monday.

Any information you can provide will be most appreciated.

I'm 39 and went to my first doctors appt. last friday. They told me that the yolk sac was larger than normal, but the baby had a heartbeat of 122 per min.  I had never heard of this before, I'm seven 1/2 weeks preg. and previously miscarried last march at 17 weeks, but the baby measured 13 weeks.  The doctor said that he had never had this brought to his attention before but that the u/s tech said that it usually means that I will miscarry or something is wrong.  I dont know what to think and I'm sacred to dealth. I'm supposed to go back in two weeks for another ultrasound.  Does anyone have any comments or advice.
Thanks,
julie

Hi Ladies,
In case a similar story helps. I just MC last week from same thing. Nutritional sack a tad on the large size, fetal pole but no HB. Jeanne I think you have a lovely perspective on all this.

Thank you for sharing your complete story. I'm in a similar situation, looking answers. I'm 41, seven weeks, things not looking good for me either.
I appreciate the follow up you shared. Thank you.

Unfortunately, we didn't have a good u/s today.  There was no heartbeat and based on the growth (fetal pole measured about 7 weeks), my doctor guessed that the embryo stopped growing about 24-48 hours ago.  Yolk sac was up to 9mm.

I'm sad, but doing OK. It was a surprise pregnancy (funny, doctors had told me I couldn't get pregnant w/out IVF and donor eggs!).  Honestly, I don't know how I would have handled a 3rd anyway, as I have a 3 year old girl with significant special needs and an 18 month old son.  I dreamed of having a typical daughter, but this experience proved to me that I am truly happy with my family as it is --and that's a gift as well.

Take care,
Jeanne

Well, obviously it wasn't a missed miscarriage! I think it's a really good sign that the fetal pole showed growth and you have a heart beat now. I don't know why the yolk sac is enlarged, but I do feel you should be very hopeful. Good luck with the u/s on Monday. Keep us posted.
