Failed the 1 hour glucose test!

by chickymama, Jun 09, 2008 11:11AM
(sigh) I didn't see that one coming! I didn't have it with my other DD, and am thin and active so I didn't think much of having the test. I was really suprised when the nurse just called and said I need to take the 3hr. My # was 146.(I don't know what it should be.) I have to be at he Hospital at 6;30 am on Thurs and can't eat after 10:00 on Wed. night. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Anyone else going through this?? Any advise??

ah yes.  i took the 1hr and scored 127 so they did it again and i was too high (can't remember the #) so i went for the 3hr and failed miserably.  I just came from the endocrinologist and have to finger *****.  i just did it before lunch and it was 76....figures!  then i will do it again in 2hrs.  I had it before and it was diet controlled.  hopefully you pass the 3hr.  if not, best wishes and feel free to ask any questions.  This is my 2nd round w/ GD.  Oh, and I am not a big person either.  i believe that is a misconception.  I don't overeat or eat bad stuff.  I do gain a lot of weight during pregnancy but my dr said that was b/c of the diabetes.  :)

GD has nothing to do with being heavy or not...Jif is right it is a misconception.  (As a matter of fact no form of diabetes has anything to do w/being heavy but Adult onset and only in some cases)  The end results are usually more weight gain and bigger babies w/GD.  2 of my close friends and one family member had it and I learned alot.  I am a heavier person but my Doc assured me that it has nothing to do with if I will get GD or not.

I really hope you are able to pass the next test or at least have a diet controled form of GD.  I wish you all the best.

i am a type 2 diabetic.  and the numbers you stated weren't as bad as you think.  my morning fastings is sometimes 147.  at one time, the doctors wanted ur numbers to be anywhere from 70-120.  but they have changed it a little because they realize not everyone's body is the same.  if my hubby (who is also a diabetic) has numbers in the 120's, he gets sick.  numbers for him in 140s is good.  so honestly,  i won't worry too much.  your next test will be just fine.  i don't want anyone to be like me.  i have to give myself insulin shots 3 times a day because of my pregnancy (i'm 6 wks along),  i dont wish that on anyone.

Thanks! I was wondering what the # range should have been. When I saw they retested jifnif at 127, 146 sounds pretty bad! ...The day before I took the test I had a big dinner at around 5:00 and didn't eat again till after the test at 9:00 the next morning. So I had only the glucose in me, wonder if that had anything to do with it? Ya think I should eat at around 9:30 or so Wed. night? What would be a good food to choose??

jifnif, how did the GD effect your other pregnancy? Did you have to get induced early or anything??

denise_m09, My Grandpa(not bio my Mom was adopted) was a bad diabetic and also had to get shots 3 times a day and would go in to shock if his levels got out of wack. He had 3 bio children and none of them developed it later in life (the only one still alive just turned 81yrs) so it's not always genetic. Is this your first pregnancy with it?? What precautions will you have to take??

W/ my son I was induced at the 39 week mark.  give or take.  I had gotten huge and they were afraid the baby was going to do the same.  Not to mention my 45lb weight gain on a small frame.  I had hemorrhoids and was in so much pain b/c of how heavy my belly was.  I swear my pelvis was gonna split in half.  I have already gained 34lbs this pregnancy and I am only 30 weeks.  I don't eat bad and I don't eat junk....even pre GD.  I eat fresh fruit and veggies and I don't eat meat.  Who knows what happens to my bod once I get prego....it just freaks out.  Aside of that, I was ok.  Controlling by diet is hard for me b/c to get my numbers under 120 I am starving.  Last night I tried to eat 10 mini raviolis w/ fresh peppers and zuchini and my numbers were 146 2hrs later.  Doesn't sound too bad but when i call the numbers into the drs they freak out.  It HAS to be under 120!!!!!!  So I end up starving to keep my numbers there.  It is a small price to pay to keep you and your baby healthy.  :)

THis is actually my 5th pregnancy.  I have 3 children, 1 miscarriage. I've been a diabetic for 7 yrs, and only with my son.  Each nutrionist may tell you something different based on your needs.  I was on a 200 carb a day diet.  I was taught how to count carbs based on serving sizes, which i still do to this day.  My cousin, who is a RN and diabetic use to eat mosly protein when she was pregnant.  That worked for her.  FOr me, I just cut down on my serving sizes and paid more attention to the amount of carbs and sugars that are in foods.

I did a lot of fruits.  I'm not a big fan of veggies.  One of the important thing is serving sizes.  Instead of a whole bagel, eat a half bagal.  A half of a regular size bage has 15 carbs.  1 slice of white bread has 15 carbs as well.  Your proteins are free, meaning, they aren't (for most some people) going to cause ur sugar levels to go  up.  My dr doesnt like me to eat cereals at all.  But they do have cereals for diabetics, now.  Also, be mindful of fat free products.  They are good, but make sure u check the nutrition info on the box.  It may be low in sugar, but high in sodium.  I drink lots of water.  I stay away from sodas and sweet drinks.  Diet PEpsi Max is my favorite drink, but I try not to drink it as much.

And then I try to walk 2 miles 3 times a week.  I haven't been walking much since this heat hit.  But I am going back to it.  I hope it helps.    Oh, you should try the wheat pancake mix.  I forgot who makes it, but I bought it from Walmart.  I was shocked that it was actually pretty good.

I hope this helps.
