My real question is:
Is it possible that i contracted this from the internal ultrasound. The nurse/radiologist did place a condom type cover over the "probe," but i did not have any of these issues before i had the internal ultrasound.
I have been married for 7 years and both my husband and i are monogomous types.
The only other thing i can think of is that my husband has had what appears to be a small cold sore in the corner of his mouth. But we have not been sexually active for at least couple of weeks.
I highly highly doubt it is from the ultrasound. In fact that is pretty much impossible since they used the probe cover. Have you had anymore blisters? I would DEFINITELY get it checked out by the OB. If it is genital herpes they usually deliver by c-section if you are having an outbreak, otherwise they like you to take antivirals around the time of delivery (my friend had this happen to her). Herpes can be dormant for a long time - is it possible either you or your dh had it prior to your marriage and didn't have another outbreak until now? Just a thought.
Thank you for your response.
I have not yet had any of the routine pregnancy std testing, I think that is next visit.
One of my reasons for thinking that the internal ultrasound may be responsible for this is that i have real trouble believing in coincidences....and as mentioned the symptoms seem to be synonymous with a "first time outbreak" i am really not sure where else i would get this from.
is herpes something that can be contracted through inanimate objects?? i wonder
thanks for your response.
Like i mentioned the symptoms that i have are synonymous with a "first time outbreak" re-occurent outbreaks are not acompanied with a fever of 102 or aches and pains etc. just the sores, frm what i have read.
Are you allergic to latex? That would give you a reaction if the cover on the probe is latex. Also, an oral cold sore is a different virus then the genital variety.
you sound like you are having your first outbreak of genital herpes. And NO, the herpes virus that is most common for coldsores(type 1) is not different than the herpes virus that can cause genital herpes.............The same virus, either strain( 1 or 2) can also be transmitted to the genital region very easily so the info. chiromom wrote is not correct. It is a common misconception but both type 1 and type 2 can affect either region: genital or oral. It is very likely you contracted type 1 genital herpes from your husbands coldsores and are just now finally having your first outbreak. Def. see your doc. asap. He is only contagious some of the time from his oral region (regardless of a coldsore present or not....asymptomatic shedding occurs in the oral region, just as it does for a genital infection but most people have no clue about this) and a simple blood test for him will tell him if he has herpes of either type and a blood test for you as well will tell you. If the blood test for you is negative at first, and then positive in a repeat test in a few weeks/months, then you will know it was recently acquired from your husband. So it is good to be tested twice if negative at first.
now a little off the question but i guess the same if i get cold sores on my mouth (which i contacted from my wife.......Thanks Babe..........) is there any way of knowing when you could spread it down there to either one of us from her to me or me to her i know when im getting one before they come on and of course do nothing to spread them then but is there any way to know before or even how long after the last girl with the comment sounded a little educated thats why im asking thanks for the info.
Sorry but you can of course be infected by an ultrasound probe even if it is covered. The 2008 CDC guidelines, and the 2008 FDA guidelines for ultrasound probe manufacturers, require that a HLD should be performed on these probes even if covered since prbe cover sometimes fail. Unfortunaltely most physicians only wipe their probes or use a spray because HLD is a heavy process (toxic chemical soaking of the probe). Unfortunately wipes or spray are not efficient on viruses and not always efficient on bacteria. You can see that a Class-Action in Canada (Ontario) finished this summer on the same basis (the hospital did not perform HLD on the covered probe). Of course everyone is saying that it must be sexual but on this point you should read a book called Fatal Probe, it is not very relevant on the scientific level but very relevant to explain why infections during obgyn exams are always said to be from sexual activity or else.

I highly doubt that it's the probe you may have gotten from. HP is secually transmitted, hepes simplex you can catch easier.
You definately can get it from hubby's lips but it is herpes simplex (cold soars, fever blisters), not gentital HP( sexually transmitted only)...there is a difference. It's forever unfortunately. If he "went down on you" with an open soar, can definately be passed.
I got fever blisters when i was 8 years old from Mono (fever exceeded 102) , and NO, they do not consider that gential herpes or an STD (c'mon, I was 8!) and get it every few years ever since.
And yes, it could also be the STD that you may have gotten or hubby got from 10 years ago or way before you met and neither or you knew as it was dormant and came out during pregnancy. It is possible.
What is important is that you get on Valtrex to stop any outbreaks prior to giving birth, no matter which type it is. It definately sounds like it though.
AND, will NOT show up on a STD test UNLESS you currently have an outbreak.
AND, herpes can be contracted at ANYTIME, showing signs or not.
I agree with the others - the most liikely scenario is that your blister is related to your husband's cold sore. It's very contagious, and you could even catch it from his hands. Yes, normal "cold sores" can appear on the genitals, so it doesn't have to be "genital herpes" as such - but you should still see your doctor while you still have the blister, just to have it checked, and so that he knows there is a possible herpes issue "down there" - for your baby's safety during delivery.
The good news is, you'll feel better soon, and if you stay healthy, outbreaks may be very rare.
I think no matter what info you are looking for, you can always find a theory that contradicts what medical science says. The reason Dr.'s tell you genital herpes is sexually transmitted is that this virus cannot live outside the human body for very long. It's the same with HPV and many others. It is extremely unlikely that genital herpes could be passed through an ultrasound probe.
If there was no risk, why a Canadian Class Action won 1.2 M$ because the hospital did not apply HLD required by the CDC on covered probes, and just wiped the covered probe instead ? You can see that you have one patient infected among 861 recalled, here is the link http://www.reolaw.ca/reo_class6.html
In France, infections from lack of disinfection of US vaginal probes are becomming a political battle.
