Getting pregnant at 42 after complications at 27

I am 42 yrs old.  My fiance and I are just starting now to try to conceive a child.  I have a 15 yr old daughter from a previous relationship.  During that pregnancy, I developed Pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, liver issues and protein in my urine.  I will say that I really did not take care of myself as I should have and the relationship wasn"t the best.  I was 6 wks pregnant when we were only dating two months.  Stress was very high.  This time around, I have been with my future husband for 11 yrs and have started a healthy lifestyle change by becoming a vegan.  My question is, what is the risk I would have to go through the same complications that I previously had?

I would like to add that being vegan you will have to take extra care when you become pregnant that you meet all your dietry requirements during pregnancy, I would suggest if you are to remain vegan during your pregnancy that you inform your doctor and visit a dietician so you know exactly how much and what you need to eat to sustain a healthy pregnancy

Zirka, it is so sad what you have been through.  But please know the conditions your baby had are very rare.  Perhaps starting another post might be a good idea?

Congrats on your pregnancy!  I am also 42 and have an almost 2 year old and trying to conceive again.  So welcome to the over 40 club!!

If you developed gestational diabetes the first time around, then your risk is higher then average to develop it a second time. Also, we moms of "advanced maternal age" have an increased risk.  It's easily managed though, and of course they will test for it.

The same is true of preeclampsia.  Pregnant women over 40 and under 20 are at higher risk, and you are considered higher risk if you had it in a previous pregnancy.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry to much.  One of the great things about having babies older is we get all sorts of extra tests made available to us.  I say that is great because it means everything is caught and dealt with before it becomes a big problem.  Make sure your OB is aware of your history.  Take good care of yourself, take your prenatals and try to just enjoy.  It sounds like your in a wonderful situation to bring a new baby into.  Congrats again, and please keep us posted.
