HCG and progesterone

by Lorraine527, Jul 22, 2009 10:07AM
I was given an HCG shot on July 9 and told to have sex on July 10 and 11, which I did.

I went the following Thursday (July 16) for a blood test and the nurse checked to see if I ovulated, which i did.
She then said that she wanted to offer me "extra support" and prescribed progesterone inserts, which I am currently taking.

I am curious as to why I was told to take the progesterone.  I read that it supports an early pregnancy.  Could I be pregnant and that is why I was prescribed the inserts?

I go for my next blood test tomorrow July 23.

What was your progesterone level?  It most likely was below 20 (not bad!) & maybe thats why?????  There is no way you can tell @ 7DPO if your pregnant , they WONT even look for that yet, in fact most Dr.'s wont even do a beta until your 14DPO.  That is only measured thru HCG & there isn't enough til at least 9DPO but closer to 12DPO.
The 2ww is hard!  Good luck! :)

Thank you for your insight.

So, in other words, when I was given my blood test, my progesterone had to be low, and that is why they offered me the extra support, just in case a pregnancy does occur.

It makes sense.

Thank you so much!!!

Yes, as a precaution - in case you are pregnant - you have been prescribed progesterone.  But they won't determine pregnancy until you take the beta test 2 weeks after you've ovulated.

Some doctors just like to prescribe progesterone as an "added precaution" to help with implanatation, regardless of your levels.

At my fertility clinic, my Dr. prescribes progesterone for everyone who walks through his door. I questionned him on this (I didn't want to take any unnecessary meds) and he wasn't too pleased with me!  All of my research indicates that it only helps women with a short luteal phase.  .

My regular Dr. who is also an ob/gyn did my Day 21 Prog test and I scored 56 which is in normal range.  She still told me to go ahead and take it as I've had a few pregnancy losses.

Best of luck to you!!

I am 45 years old.  I recently went for a micro IVF where I had 3 grade 1 eggs transferred back.  Of course I was excited.  However, I just recently found out that I am not pregnant.

My question is:  has anyone had IVF at 45 years old and used her own eggs?

I believe my doctor wants me to go with donor egg due to my age.

Am I being hopeful in thinking that I could use my own eggs?  Or is my hope all in vain?
