High 17-OH Progesterone and D-dimer Levels at 6 Weeks

by jl123290, Nov 05, 2009 07:04AM
My wife is 6 weeks pregnant and today she got the results of the 17-OH Progesterone (17-OHP) test ordered by her doc. The level was 142.38 nm/l. The results say the standard is 3.55-17.03 nm/l for weeks 5-12 so it seems her level is very high. We haven't heard from the doc yet, but reading up on this isn't helping. It seems that a low level is linked to premature birth, but we haven't found much on very high levels. I did find that infants with this could have genital development issues. Overall, we can say that we don't understand at all what the risk of a high level might be and what can be done about it.

Also, my wife has had multiple blood tests to check her D-dimer levels. They have been consistenly high. The doc has us giving her daily injections of two different medicines. Reading about the medicines is concerning too, as both are not receommended for use in pregnancy unless the benefit outweighs the risk. I don't understand either so it seems we'd rather not use it! Does anyone have experience with high D-dimer and pregnancy?

Thanks.

I do not have much experience with D-dimer at all.  I am also 6 weeks pg and have had issues with progesterone mine is usually to low and I need intramuscular injections to help the levels stay safe for the baby.  I do know that progesterone levels are checked to see how the lining of the uterus is doing and will a baby be supported.  I am thinking with the high progesterone level and the D-dimer the dr is making sure the lining of the uterus does not become to thick or to thin.  I know what you are feeling I can only get PG through IVF and the medications I have taken (some of them) say do not use if pg or planning to become pg.  So far so good I have a 5 yr old daughter and am waiting for that 12 week mark to come.  Best of luck to you!

D-dimer tests that remain consistently high is letting the doctor know that your wife is at a high risk for blood clots, which can be fatal to both your wife and baby. The benefit definitely outweighs the risk and I strongly suggest that she continue with Lovenox/heparin or whatever she is presently taking. She will be doing herself more harm than good if she were to stop the daily injections.

The D-Dimer number came down a bit at the last blood test, but it is still high. We've been instructed to continue giving the shots of Fraxiparine for it. We live in Eastern Europe and are flying to the States for Christmas. My wife will be at 12-weeks when we go. Flying obviously raises the risk of DVT so now we are really concerned! The doctor says it is ok still as long as my wife moves around a lot and she drinks plenty of water. Too bad the airports don't allow you to take water with you anymore!

My wife got her latest results for the 17-OHP today and it went up higher despite the medicine being taken for it. We just don’t understand what this means. Her testosterone level has gone higher than normal now too. Unfortunately I don’t speak the local language fluently (and I’m certainly not up on medical vocabulary) so I can’t really ask a lot of questions on this.

On a positive note, we saw the heartbeat in the ultrasound this week (week 7)!
