High Risk for Trisomy 18

What are your experiences with the first trimester (NT and blood screening) test? I've been told I'm high risk for trisomy 18 due to blood results (NT test looked great/normal). My maternal age has caused the high risk determination (if I was "normal age," apparently the lab would've put me in a different range). I will follow up with amnio to find out for certain what is going on, but it'd be nice to hear from others who've had this experience.

NT results in the paper says:
value 1.8mm   MOM/delta +0.19

Ecologic:

what scare me is the trisomy 18/13
my paper says:
1st trimestre cut off                         risk before screeniing         risk after screeining
  1 in 150                                               1 in 82                              1 in 109

ADGAL: i think is what the doctor says 1.18  in the paper says 1.8mm(?)

You should open your own post, a lot of people do not look at posts that started a long time ago - I generally don't look!

You can wait 2 weeks and have the blood test repeated. That's what they did with me. My risk for DS went from 1/1400 to 1/1600. I had decided to wait until the 2nd results to make the decision of having an amnio or not - decided not to have one.

My NT was 1.6 I think.

I'm assuming your NT was 1.18?  Totally normal range.

As for the 1:109...those are great odds!! Mine was 1:13 (I did have amnio, which I don't regret at all) and he is a normal healthy little boy.

Only do amnio if you are comfortable...if you want details on it, I am happy to tell you about my experience.

To me things sound fine though.

Hi there
Can you clarify your NT measurement? It's usually given in millimeters.
Is there a decimal point missing?

You should message Dragon1973...she's an expert at this stuff!  She's helped me out so much.  I just delivered a baby with Down Syndrome May 27 and she's been a blessing!

I had a combined first and second prenatal screening test done. My bloodwork came back very high risk for down syndrome (1:30), higher than my age related risk alone "39" which is about (1:100). I also had a nuchal translucency done which was fine, but was not used in the risk calculation b/c the med centre hadn't completed enough scans.
Needless to say I was extremely distressed by my risk assessment and decided to have an amnio. The amnio btw was a cinch, not painful, just an odd sensation. The following 3 days were very stressful waiting for fish results but everything came back "normal". Several women on this board were very helpful in calming my fears. Although I knew the tests were NOT diagnostic, its very diffucult not to think the worst. Good luck, as Sue said once you have the amnio done you'll know one way or another. Most likely, you'll have a good result!
Keep the faith, Christine

Hi,
I had a similar experience- my NT scan was "great", but the blood results combined with my age said high risk for Down Syndrome.  I was told the exact same thing: with my blood results, if I were 36 they would say they were normal, but because I'm so ancient that skewed the results.
I tried not to worry for the two weeks before the amnio and four long days later found out I am carrying a genetically normal little girl.
This prejudice towards age is tough!  If my midwife tells me one more time I'm going to be 42 at delivery I'll show her how immature a 41-year-old can be!  ;-)

Hi ,

The first trimester screening is automatically going to put anyone over 35 at a high risk and the result is only an estimated guess -  so it will freak anyone out. I'm 42 ( 41 when I had the NT ) so my risk was high - NT was thick, no nasal bone.....The sonographer said to skip the blood screening and go for the amnio which I did.   His words stressed me out.  But, the amnio will give you a definitive answer.  Good luck to you - hope all goes well. Its more stressful the days before the procedure. Take it easy after - no heavy lifting, great excuse to rest and be pampered.
