How not to gain weight..

How not to gain weight and not diet while pregnant? So all the sites say that if you are overweight to start off with you do not need to gain much weight while pregnant.  But don't diet! So exactly how do you keep the weight off? If you stick to your normal eating habits you are bound to gain weight (generally there is a reason we are not small to start off with), and if you see it creeping up then you have no choice but to diet. With my first I gained a record of 60lbs and am sh1t scared of the same happening again (never lost it all to start off with) Exercise with a 1 yr old and a full time job is virtually impossible. and I generally try to watch what I eat anyway, so I have no choice but to diet. Any other ideas? How are the other big girls doing?

I was overweight starting out my pregnancy as well, and was determined to keep my weight down for alot of reasons.  Being "older" I knew it was going to be harder to get it off, the risk of gestational diabetes, and the fact putting on 50 lbs on top of the 50 I was already holding would make me miserable just doing normal tasks (not to mention in my job I am fairly active).  I have gained 4 pounds and I am almost 26 weeks. My baby is measuring about a week ahead, so he is healthy.

I couldn't eat a lot early, mostly carbs. But now that my appetite is back (kind of) I just eat several times a day, but small amounts.  I have never been one to eat breakfast, but I do that, then a snack mid morning, lunch, another snack, and supper.  I don't eat before I go to bed, but you may want to.  I have just found out I will start insulin soon, but believe I would have been on it much earlier if I had not had this routine.  My thinking is the same as if you are not pregnant, keep food in your body to keep your metabolism up. It has worked for me.  I was a little concerned about only gaining 4 pounds so far, but the doctors office has not said a word to me.  Make sure you eat healthy, just like everyone else said. Veggies, whole grain, fiber, lean meat, cut your carbs in half, and drinks lots of water.

It is all going to depend on your appetite, and will power.  I don't desire sweets, except the occasional Pepsi, which I limit to only a couple a week, so I don't have to battle the krispy creme craving (thank goodness).  Good luck!!

All I could eat for the first 3 mos was carbs!

I've decided to throw my scale away and let nature take its course.  Over the holidays, I ate like a pig and gained 4 pounds in a month.  Over the past week, I have been truly watching it and I gained 2 pounds.  I figure I'll deal with it after the preg.  With DD, all 40+ pounds came off within 3 mos or so, all but 5 of it in three weeks.  Hope I'm as lucky this time!

Heck, eating is one of the only fun things you can do while preg!

Good luck to you.

You may want to discuss a plan with your ob/gyn. It is very important that baby receive all of the necessary nutrients every day. I completely understand that it is difficult to not focus on weight gain when you are starting out a little heavier than you would like. I gained 40 with my first and 50 with my second. I am also very concerned about weight gain with this pregnancy and am trying to find ways to keep it under control. I try to eat healthy, drink lots of water and stay away from empty calories.

I am also a full time working mom. We recently signed up for a family membership at our local YMCA. Since winter tends to be icy here, I am looking forward to walking on the treadmill and indoor track a few times a week. I also enrolled in their prenatal fitness class. Hubby is with the kids in the evening while I go exercise because he understands my concerns about my weight this pregnancy. And, I usually come home in a good mood after exercising.

Since the best pregnancy exercise is walking, try fitting at least 20 minutes, several times a week if not daily, into your routine. It doesn't even need to be all at once either (10 minutes morning and evening, or over your lunch break). Treat yourself to new walking shoes and an iPod Shuffle or Nano to get and keep you motivated. And, my best secret is to keep reminding myself that baby comes first right now and I can always work on that extra weight after baby is born. Good luck!

****. You mean I'm not supposed to be downing my Krispy Kreme's????? Not fair.

Just kidding, but I agree w/ what's been listed. I'm in your same boat and am just watching the total calories of what I eat and (trying) to not eat ****. Have to admit I'm a carboholic though so I'm not veering away as much as I should. I'm 21w3d and I've gained 10lbs so far. My last to preggos I gained 33.5 EXACTLY and would like to keep this one to 20lbs so I better start watching it more closely

I am not pregnant yet (hope to be, though!) but my doc said to avoid bad/empty carbs (like white bread, corn...etc). melimeli is right, just eat healthy - lots of veggies and lean meat. And drink LOTS of water! If it's comfortable for you to walk (am assuming you're preggy now?), park a little farther so you get a little more walk. here in the office, i try to take a break every 2 hours and just walk around the office (or outside if it's a nice weather) for about 10-15 minutes. try to incoporate little exercise movements into your daily chores - even while watching TV!

Hope this helps a bit :-)

it is ok to watch what you eat... you can eat healthy and cut out the junk.. that is not dieting it is just eating healthy...  what they don't want you to do is cut back a lot on calories.... I went to a dietitian at about 10w because I lost about 100lbs 2 years ago and did not want to gain it all back... I am still a size 14 so I am not a skinny minny... but she said that I should eat at least 1500 calories a day minimun which is more than I was eating...  If you ask your doc I am sure they would let you see one too... good luck
