Try not to worry (I know easier said then done).  I'm 40 yrs old and had my first ultrasound at 5w 6d and all they saw was the gestational sac and the yolk sac and a very tiny (1/2 size of a grain of rice) as the fetal pole with no heartbeat.  I had to go back in 7 days and I saw a bigger fetal pole with a heartbeat.  Believe me 3 days will make a huge different, believe it or not.  I'm sure everything is just fine and you will see the heartbeat when you go back.  Also, I'm 27 weeks pregnant today and everything is going well.

Keep us posted.

Good Luck!
Debbie

Ditto to what Debbie said...its really early.  Things start to grow very quickly at this stage, and there is every good chance that you will see the fetal pole, and maybe even that beautiful heartbeat at the next u/s.  I know you will worry, its natural, but try your best to stay calm and relaxed.  The waiting is the worse, I know.  Take care and all the best to you.  Amanda

I had the same thing. I went in for an U/S when I was 5 1/2 weeks along. There was a sac but not much else. went back a week later and there was a HB. My levels were right on target as well. Believe me, I know it is so hard not to worry but I bet they will see something great next week.

Five weeks is a little too early to see the heartbeat yet.  Your HCG levels sound really good, so I would expect to see your little bean by your next visit and even if you don't, it'll probably show in another week.

im about 4 to 5 weeks and a little over a week ago my doctor told me I was pregnant and I was shocked. I thought I was starting menopause early (im 41) but i had missed a period and he told me my hcg level was at 12,000. I saw some light pink spotting a few days later and I called the doctor. He looked on the ultrasound and didn't see a HB and ordered a blood test. He called and told me that my hcg level was now at 5,000 and that I would probably miscarry soon. I don't feel any cramps , I have no pregnancy symptoms and I haven't seen any spotting in over 2 days. What should I think?

I go to see him on Monday again and at that time he's going to tell me whether or not I should have a D&C , but i'm scared because what if things change like my levels go up (is that even possible?). I just don't want to lose faith if there is a possibility this could work out. Should I ask for another blood test?

Yes!  I have read lots of these forums searching for info get another blood test and ultas sound was there a sac?   Sometimes if it is twins you may loose one twin so levels drop and then start to go up again becouse the other still may be vital if you are 4 weeks no way would you hear a heartbeat.  Remember they work for you do not be afraid to ask for what you need to put your mind at ease   Please keep me posted!  BE well!

Thanks because i was somewhat afraid to ask for another blood test or ultrasound because he's a really good doctor. I'll let you know what he tells me. Thanks again.

Also  are you sure of your dates, do you no when you ovulated there is also a window of 3 days in either direction so you could be not as far along.

I don't mean to upset you, but if your HCG levels have actually dropped, that is not a positive sign.  However, you do not need to make a decision immediately.  When this happened to me, I had 2 more blood draws, 48 hours apart and another ultrasound.  I needed to know in my heart that there was no chance.  The fact that an ultrasound showed no heartbeat this early is not a big issue, as it is very early.  But a large drop in HCG is not a good sign.  You may not have had any physical sign of miscarriage because your body does not yet know its not pregnant.  Its called a missed miscarriage.  I am sorry, I really don't mean to upset you, but I have been through this and one of them was a missed.  I hope I am wrong, or that the blood tech made a mistake.  I wish you all the best.  Take care.

Although it doesn't look good, I agree with blueboo that a loss of one of twins can cause those problems while still leaving the other baby to develop normally.  The older you get, the more likely you are to have twins anyway.  Don't give up hope yet.  You're in my prayers.

At 5weeks 4 dys we saw no yolk, no h/b and just a few days later, at 6 weeks 1 day we saw the h/b.  Most ob's would not do an u/s till 7 weeks since you may or may not see the h/b before that.  your #s look good.  Congrats on your pregnancy!

I'm doing ok now. It's been two weeks now since the MC and I'm going good. I barely have any signs of pain now. I'm nervous about trying again and anxious at the same time. I will be devastated if I try again and the same thing happens.
