Good luck to you all.  If your tests come back that you are unlikely to respond to ivf drugs then the clinic will want you to have the highest chance to get pregnant (hence the donor egg idea). We had donor sperm as my hubby's tests said we wouldn't get pregnant otherwise, and ivf because it was our best chance of getting pregnant (much higher than iui).
We will love this baby because it is very much more wanted after what we've been through and I think for a mum even easier to love because when a baby is growing inside you it doesn't matter where it's genetics came from, it is your baby and you will all be a family.
I wish you every success. IVF is a long hard road with a glimmer of hope but in my mind worth the heartache for the miracle.

Thank you for posting. I need your good vibes. I just had my embryo transfer yesterday. I'm 40, this is my 1st IVF.  3 embryos: 2 grade IV (8 & 5), 1 grade III (4). 10 more days to check if I'm pregnant. Eating healthy, NOT thinking about the 20K we spent, keeping my spirit up & praying every sec! 2GodBDGlory. #PinCushionsRock

Hello,
I am 41 and delivered a healthy baby girl on January 31, 2008, she was concieved by IVF.  I had one unsuccessful attempt with IVF, non of my embryos made it to day 5, I didn't get much of an explination from that doctor so I went to another doctor who did the next IVF transfer on day 3 which he thought was better for my embryos.  He said that I am a better incubator than the contrast they use in the lab, he was right!!  PLEASE, PLEASE learn as much as you can so you can ask the right questions when you are meeting with your doctor.  I don't know why the one clinic told you they will not do IVF when you are 40, there are clinics that do IVF into your 50s-60s just not with your egg.
Keep in mind there are several test (one person already commented on) that you must go through before they will start you on a cycle of IVF, this will help them determine what is causing the infertility problem.  They will also do blood draws to determine if you are producing ovum, if this looks successful they will probably tell you that you are a candidate for IVF.
As far the stress, I was so stressed out during my pregnancy I worried about down syndrome and other complications but I prepared myself as best I could to understand the test, what are normal results and what to expect. You will love your baby no matter what the outcome is.  I say go for it, it is the BEST thing I have ever done!  I can't forget to mention I am starting IVF again to see if we can have another baby, my retrieval is tentatively scheduled for June 12th and I am using my own eggs!!
Good Luck and keep your chin up!

They won't give you meds unless you have gone through certain tests.  For example they will look in your uterus to make sure everything looks good.  Have you tried IUI with meds?  I tried IUI three times with three different med combos - to see how I react to the durgs.  Then we tried IVF with stronger and more expensive meds and it was called off once.  Then we went to $4500 worth of meds and that round resulted in a chemical pregnancy.  I have done the same drug combo again and am waiting to test on Thursday.  I am so scared that we are not pregnant that for the first time I cannot take a HPT.  I know that I will collapse emotionally.  I am telling you all of this to let you know that as hard as it is everyone has to try until they won't look back in regret.  Each person is different.  The odds are against us but there are successes.  I don't want to use a donor egg but I have to try until I am successfull or give up.  If I give up however - I won't ever regret moving to the donor egg.  Good luck and follow your heart.  There are happy endings.

My RE usually doesn't do IVF with your eggs if your past 43. He said the only way he would try with my eggs was if all my test numbers came back great. Which they did and he was greatly suprised. He also explained the % for success was only about 5% due to age. I was like 40smama, had to try at least once. Some doctors just won't do it because they are afraid of affecting their statistics.

jackson - my re let me try IVF w/my own eggs at 43.  She didn't really comment one way or another whether I should or shouldn't use my own eggs - she just told me of one of her patients who was 43 and got pregnant via IVF w/triplets and she did great.  My cycle was cancelled due to poor ovarian stimulation but at least I got to try once.  Unless there's some really good reason, I would think your drs would at least give it a shot.  To be honest, if I hadn't tried at least once to get pg w/my own eggs, I too would've been extremely frustrated.

I don't understand.  I guess that they don't want to let you try because your chances of sucess are statistically lower and you might screw up their numbers.  I am forty and waiting to see if I am pregnant from IVF.  I did this in December and had a chemical pregnancy.  I know that my odds are low but am still trying.  This time when I went in for the embryo transfer, the fertility doctor had just recieved word that one patient was pregnant with twins after IVF.  She is 42.  So yes you can do it - you only have around a 20 something % chance of sucess.  This translates to 80% chance of failure at some clinics.  Find another clinic and good luck.

Thanx for the well wishes ~ was told today "TOO OLD TO DO IVF" ~ "CORNELL DOESN'T do after 40" there is NO WAY ETHICALLY ANYONE WOULD TAKE A CHANCE...STATISTICS HAVE OBLITYERATED ANYONE AFTER 40 FROM GETTING AN IVF UNLESS THERE WAS TUBAL PROBLEMS OR A VASECTOMY REVERSAL PROBLEMS ~ "EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES" ~ "THEY" "STOPPED DOING IVF ON ANY WOMAN OVER 40 YEARS AGO"..??.. ~ DO YOU KNOW OF THIS INFORMATION..??........(.I WAS TOLD TO ASK THE OTHER RE WHO IS SO WELL-PUBLICIZED IN NJ OF THIS INFORMATION , ETC....TOLD HIM I'D RATHER NOT DO THAT BECAUSE OF THE UNCOMFORTABLE FEELING WE GOT ).........??........SO WE WERE DIRECTED TO PICK OUT A DONOR MOM'S EGG ~ FOUND ONE WHO REASONABLY RESEBLES ME ~ DUE TO THE "CERTAINTY" OF DOWNS, ETC.......MOST PREGNANCIES "AT YOUR AGE" END IN MISCARRIAGES...........NICE POSITIVE TALK ~ AN THERE WAS NO WAY HE WOULD EVEN CONSIDER DOING AN IVF WITH MY OWN EGGS........ SEEMS LIKE WE'RE BEING BACKED INTO THE NEVER-ENDING DONOR EGG SITUATION AROUND HERE THAT NO-ONE WANTS TO HELP US TO CONCEIVE OUR OWN CHILD WITHOUT A DONOR AND WITH OUR OWN CHROMOSOMES..................
